Ap Environmental Science Reflection

Decent Essays
Many students do not have the opportunity to experience a class that influences their lives, but I was fortunate enough to have such an experience. The subject that has influenced me the most is AP Environmental Science (APES). The class focuses on the world we live in and explains how people’s actions can either harm or benefit the environment. With each chapter, the teacher provided real world examples, along with important analysis, to describe how humans affect their own ecosystems. Such an example is how China continues to deplete the world's resources and how there are many different types of sustainable ways to get energy through which I never knew existed. The class provided me with a whole new world view and helped me to realize that

Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

Seneca Valley is one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to advanced placement (AP) course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that a district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for the opportunity of AP. To be included on the 6th Annual Honor Roll, Seneca Valley had to, since 2013, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the number of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher “AP courses give students the opportunity to explore the world from a variety of perspectives and study subjects in greater depth and…

There are many misconceptions in astronomy. For example, many people (even Harvard graduates) believe that the reason that seasons exist is that the closer Earth is to the sun, the hotter it is, resulting in summer. Likewise, the further away the Earth is from the Sun, the colder it is, resulting in winter. We know that the reason seasons exist is because of the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth. For instance, when Earth is on the right of the Sun, the tilt causes the northern hemisphere to be in the dark and the southern hemisphere to be illuminated in daylight.…

The quality of the water in the creek was excellent. Even though the water quality in the U-High creek was excellent doesn’t mean that all creeks have great water quality. One way that water can be polluted is through fertilizers and pesticides. This happens because farmers use many fertilizers and pesticides to help their crops grow. Then when it rains, those chemicals can be washed through the soil and into rivers and creeks.…

While many cities shaped our nation’s history, Chicago was perhaps the most influential of them all. Chicago had many popular trading hubs, and three very popular commodities were grain, lumber, and meat. These commodities helped illustrate three very important facts relating to Chicago that Cronon emphasizes; the combination of economic and environmental history, the symbiotic relationship between city and country, and the difference between “first” and “second” nature. I will begin by discussing the combination of economic and environmental history, and how these three commodities played a vital role in that combination.…

Typically, two people around the same age can relate on a relatively personal level. However, when these two people come from opposite ends of the world, they can be extremely different. For this ecological system interview, I realized that I have lived a very different life from Yue, a student I interview from Southeast China. Yue is from a very large metropolitan area in Southeast China with nearly eight million people.…

The state of the environment in 1948 was arguably similar to the state of the environment today. Environmental concerns such as air and water pollution were, and are currently a major concern. The main difference in 1948 however, was that pertinent regulations and laws had yet to be enacted. Conceivably, the main benefit of an unfortunate pollution catastrophe in 1948, which put into motion several environmental milestones, was the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. This act paved the road for environmental turning points such as The Clean Air Act of 1970, and the Clean Water act of 1972, as well as countless others.…

Outgassing of carbon dioxide (CO2) from inland waters has been estimated to offset approximately 20% of net uptake of carbon into the terrestrial biosphere. However, this calculation is based on estimates of source strength at the air-water interface that is highly uncertain [Ciais et al., 2013]. One of the largest unknowns is the accuracy and precision of freshwater partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) estimates. To better understand observational uncertainty in CO2 flux from inland waters, here we conduct an analysis of historical observations and take new field observations at the North Temperate Lake Long Term Ecological Research (NTL LTER) site to quantify random errors in freshwater carbon system. We further estimate errors contribution to the precision of pCO2 derived from multiple carbonate equilibria and identify other sources of uncertainty in pCO2 calculations.…

Discovering Microbes In A Mini Ecosystem Introduction: Every ecological environment provides with distinct nutrients that allows certain microorganism to survive and grow. Sergei Winogradsky, a Russian microbiologist, developed the Winogradsky Column to grow and investigate microorganisms in a complex biofilm communities. This column will grow different microbes at different gradients that will appear on the column. Depending on the various concentrations of nutrients, choice of soil and water used, a variety of organism will appear over time in the column (Esteban et al., 2015).…

According to Merriam Webster, science is defined as the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. This is a very complex and wordy way of saying that science is the study of everything and anything through means of experimentation and lengthy experimentation. This idea to an average fifth grader wouldn’t hit home nearly as it would for me, as a junior. I have gone through years of science, ranging from the first grade all the way to where I am now, AP Chemistry. From the very beginning I was taught to never stop questioning.…

In Webster’s dictionary the definition of Environmental Science states that, it is “the branch of science concerned with the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the environment and their effect of organisms”. In the experiment Environmental Science deals with how the human body will be affected in the environment with or without using electrolytes during an exercise. While conducting the experiment Aleckzar used his brother Alekczar to see if there would be a significant difference when Alekczar would/ would not use or drink an electrolyte like Gatorade. When doing the experiment Alekczar went and ran outside for about thirty minutes to an hour. Then he rested for about an hour, afterwards he went back outside and started up…

During my first semester at the University of Southern California, I took a Women in International Development class after reading about Wangari Mathai’s life and how science was utilized as a means for empowering the poor and women as a result changing an entire country’s government. With encouragement from my professor and inspiration from Mathai, I decided to further explore an interdisciplinary education, leading me to my chosen field: environmental studies. Becoming a scientific diver changed my educational direction. The ocean took my breath away with its wide variety of life and showed me the many dimensions of the underwater world which created a special interest in me for the marine and coastal environmental fields.
