Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. The writing skills that I had learned in both classes dealt with analysis papers pertaining to a specific prompt or style. I also had been exposed to lots of literature, specifically short novels and poetry that I had to interpret. My high school AP English classes prepped me for the college level writing class at High Point University. In the AP English classes I took, the classes graded on a scoring scale of 1-9. It was very challenging to get high scores on …show more content…
I spend so much time worrying about the transitions within my body paragraphs that I tend to forget about the unnecessary, additional, or redundant phrases. For example, in Writing Project 1, I said in the third body paragraph: “The surrounding design around the article is unskillful.” The “surrounding” and “around” words used in the same sentence created a redundancy that didn’t flow as smoothly as it could have with just one of these words. Word choice is another weakness that is seen in my essays, since I do not use strong vocabulary words and sometimes write sentences with vague pronouns rather than specifying with the subject that I address in the body paragraph sentences. A smaller weakness that I have with writing essays is the minor error of not formatting citations correctly in MLA, but instead having part of the source in APA. For example, in Writing Project 2, my first citation about the social calculus of voting uses the last name of the author and the date in the style of APA when instead, it should use the author and page number. I need to not neglect reviewing the format portion of my essay before submitting my final

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). APUSH has been difficult for me due to the fact that I had very little knowledge of US history preceding my enrollment in the class. Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…

On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

I would like to take AP English next year because reading and writing are incredibly important skills. No matter what field I chose to study in college, knowing how to read and write are pivotal to success. Beyond that I am honestly tired of letting each and every opportunity pass me by. Prior to my junior year I had basically thought that I wasn’t cut out for AP classes, or they were too much work. In the first semester of my junior year my grades took a huge leap almost gaining a full GPA point, and ending the first semester with an unweighted 4.0.…

When I started English Composition 1 class, I felt that I needed to improve my writing skills. Most of what I had learned in high school was different than that of my college English course. During this semester, our class worked on several different types of essays which included basic argument essay, rhetorical analysis, synthesis essay, and finally a reflective essay. After almost completing the course, I feel like I have grown to become a more prepared writer because of all the useful information that I have learned. I know that everything that I have learned in this semester will be useful for my future classes and work, where I will be most likely writing scholarly essays, lab reports, and so on.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

In a majority of my English classes the teacher taught the class by making us write papers, or by making the class read. I personally preferred learning by reading instead of by writing papers. In my English III class the teacher taught the class by videos, reading, teaching, and writing papers. I enjoyed when my English III teacher taught the class, and when she let us read, even though most of the class thought the books she gave us to read were uninteresting. In my high school English III class there was a low point in the class, I found a weakness of mine, and I found a difficulty that I am slowly overcoming.…

Reflective Essay College so far has not been as bad as I thought it would be, my teachers are nice, my courses have not been too difficult, and I actually enjoy it. My classes this semester especially have not been too hard, but are still challenging. All in all, English 102 has been enjoyable, I learned how to research sources, cite sources, and was introduced to many ways to use sources in context with each other.…
