Ap Calculus And Student Success Essay

Improved Essays
Another class that is helping me grow as a student through skills for academic success is AP Calculus. I’ve always been sort of good at math but this class was nothing I had expected it to be. Typically, in math you learn the rule or the formula and then you just use it straightforward. Calculus is anything but straightforward. In this class you learn the rule and formula but you are expected to figure out how to use them in a number of different ways. Other math classes have been tests of skill but Calculus is a test of skill and problem solving. This class has taught me that college may be a bit more difficult than I thought. I am learning that everything is not so straight forward. Some thing's require a higher level of thinking that I need to be prepared to give. This higher level of math is teaching me that there are more layers to things than we think. To be successful we need to be able to see farther than just the surface. …show more content…
I always see my peers stop putting in effort when things start to get difficult. They say things like, “I already know I’m going to fail so I'm not even gonna try”. The problem with this is that you're shooting yourself in the foot by doing this. You are significantly decreasing your own chances of success if you don't give it your best shot. In addition to that, the way to success is paved by failure. Every failure comes with its own set of lessons to help you be more successful in the future. By Giving up or stop trying you completely miss the lesson and you’ll continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. Always remember that you miss 100% of the shots you don't

When I was first accepted into the TexPrep program to begin my first year of instruction, I honestly never expected much to come out of it. I shrugged it off and thought of it as an excuse for parents to get kids out of the house for a few hours in the summer. It wasn’t until the end of the instruction that I perceived how much my time there had actually aided me in my studies. For one thing, what the teachers introduced to me in their courses bewildered me as I most likely would have never learned what was offered, at least at the pace of a regular high school student.…

I currently hold an Associate of Science in Biomedical Equipment Technology and this format is new to me. I attended a College that focused on one course a month and had to adjust to a course being spread out over several months. Understanding the problems in Algebra taught me that there is always some type of formula to solve an equation. There is not one specific problem that I can reflect on over the other, because they all have their patterns. Sometimes there is more than one way to arrive at the correct answer.…

Everyone has a different perspective and interpretation about failure. Some people see failure as an unpleasant thing or a limitation of their capabilities, while others see failure as a learning opportunity or a guide on how to become better. For example, in the article, “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail,” the author, Angel B. Perez, implies that failure should not be feared because it is not as harmful as most people think it is. He points out that failure is necessary if we want to succeed in college and in life.…

American innovator and businessman Henry Ford once said, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” An individual encounters countless failures in his or her lifetime. The failures can be evaluated and valuable life lessons can be learned from them. I have faced many failures throughout my life. One challenge I've experienced during my pursuit in engineering and my education as a whole has been AP Calculus AB. Considering I've had high grades in previous maths, I assumed that calculus would not be a problem. However, those previous classes could not have given me a sense of what a college level math class would be like, which I learned very quickly. Calculus has been a surprising taste of what college learning is like. I now know that much of the learning is going to be one's own responsibility.…

This letter is intended to help me figure out what skills I have learned in this class, and what skills I was lacking and had already obtained coming into this class. This is my first year in college, but I had many of my teachers in high school that prepared me for the rigorous calculus course. I took calculus AB my senior year of high school, so I had all of the skills I needed prior to entering this class. I knew the Limit, Derivative, and Anti-Derivative topics, and in depth.…

As a student who transferred to Saint Joe to continuing schooling, doing so has been my best decision yet. Ever since my senior year in high school taking on a part time job in a factory I have enjoyed the atmosphere. A factory is a place where I was young, just coming in at the legal age of eighteen. I had many people above me tell me it was so inspiring to see someone who worked so hard for my age. Four years later, here I am still going to school and working at the same place.…

I learned about the school from my former middle school, West Cary, and I started learning more and more about it before I applied. Wake Early College and STEM Early College came to my middle school to give a presentation on the schools, and my dad was taken away with how great Wake Early College was. I, however, liked STEM more because it was at North Carolina State University, and I knew that if I could do well in the high school classes and college classes mixed there, then I would have a great chance of getting into NCSU.…

    Why Math Is Important

If I was to describe mathematics I would describe it as using numbers to solve problems. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, mathematics is “the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations”. I believe mathematics is not just a class you have to take in school. It is not just a class that students dread to take in school. Some students will do anything to avoid mathematics.…

Furthermore, I found a subject that helped me to capture my curiosity about the world and invest it into my learning.
