Photosynthesis is the process used by plants, algae and some bacteria, to use the energy from the sunlight to transform carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. The equation for photosynthesis is: carbon dioxide + water light energy glucose + oxygen. Chloroplasts are an organelle found in the leaves of green plants and are essential in photosynthesis as they are responsible for producing the glucose and storing the energy. Photosynthesis is vital for all life on earth as the plants create their own food and produce fresh oxygen that we breathe. The purpose of the practical is to measure the rate of oxygen that is produced during photosynthesis under three different temperatures of 20°C, 25°C and 30°C. To achieve …show more content…
Each of the test tubes contained 1ml of oxygen after the sodium carbonate was placed in the test tube. Once the weekend was over and it was time to gather the results, it was discovered that the practical failed and only resulted in of range of errors. However, in theory what should happened, was that the photosynthetic rate of the different temperatures should have differed. This should have happened as the enzymes that carry out photosynthesis grow sensitive to a particular range of temperatures and only efficiently carry out photosynthesis when they are working at their optimum level. In the similar experiment conducted by Biology Notes (see reference 1), they produced a graph depicting their results (see figure 2), which produces a clear view on the rate on photosynthesis. It is clear in their results, that during the colder temperatures 0-15°C the enzymes are slowed causing the photosynthesis rate to only steadily grow. For the plant in the graph the optimum temperature, the temperature at which the enzymes are working to their full potential, is around 20-28°C which produced the greater photosynthetic rate. However beyond 28°C the rate significantly drops as the enzymes are greatly affected by hotter temperatures and start to die. As differing temperatures for the practical were only 20°C, 25°C and 30°C, it would have been difficult to see that drastic changes the occurred in the biology …show more content…
There were a possible range of errors that each contributed to the fact that this certain practical didn’t work. The first error that was sure to occur was that there wasn’t enough light to begin with. Sunlight is a crucial aspect of photosynthesis without it or not enough of it, photosynthesis will not occur and the plant will die. Thus the plants in the experiment, were only located near a skylight and would not have obtained enough light to survive causing no photosynthesis to occur and resulting in the plant to
