Why is it important to study literature? I can think of many reasons to answer that question. What it comes down to is a bridge between two unalike ideas or things. Or maybe they are alike, yet they have no means of connection. When two people stand on opposite sides of the world, they are different, but they are brought together by a love and an appreciation for written words in whatever form they may be. The emotions contained in the imagery and flow of the sentences or phrases all describe the same questions about reality or beauty of the world; it’s just in different forms. The power of literature is that it can fill in the gap between time periods since all people have a similar understanding of the world. Each person has a way that works best for them to share their feelings. There are writers such as E. E. Cummings that utilizes poems to share his thoughts on the world. In his poem, “anyone lived in a pretty how town,” Cummings encourages his readers to not become an ordinary person with a bland life. The way he writes is unique to him, but the meaning still stands true. Other authors, such as Shakespeare write in the form of a play. The dialogue between the characters in “Hamlet” delves deeper into the characters and allows the reader to discover more about them to understand the overall message of not seeking revenge. Shelley writes about the same theme, only in the form of a novel: Frankenstein. Although both authors chose different styles to convey the theme, the message is still clear.
