Problem Statement:
Can supplements help with anxiety patients better than medications that are designed to treat it?
Research/ Review of Literature:
An experiment that was conducted by Shaheen Lakhan and Karen Vieira (2010) found that patients who suffer from an anxiety disorder/ depression could benefit from having a supplement x, which contains kava, that will reduce anxiety. The experiment had two groups. The first group was patients that were diagnosed as having anxiety or depression (n=1786). The other group had patients that were healthy (n=877). The research team demonstrated their results using an anxiety scale, that showed how much anxiety a person expressed through a scale of 0 (Low Anxiety) to 10 (high anxiety). The results demonstrated

Piper methysticum (kava) is a member of the pepper family .Kava (Kava Kava) is a non-addictive and has been tested on patients that showed signs of anxiety. Kava is also known to help reduce skeletal muscle tension, which might be another reason why this supplement helps reduce anxiety. Kava does not change or alter mental clarity or interferes with alertness, reaction time or cognitive abilities. The affects from kava comes from the synergistic mechanism of the kava’s roots. Currently there have been six active ingredients discovered the roots, which are compounds called kava lactones. Kava has been shown to reduce skeletal muscle tension by acting on the central spinal nerves. In the brain it travels through the limbic system and “takes control” of homeostatic mechanisms. The hemostatic mechanisms regulates blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate and are also involved with the “fight or flight” response. This substance decreases anxiety by limiting the anxiety symptoms which were shown to originate by the “fight or flight” response. The information was reported in the previous research and my own conclusions. The participants that were receiving Kava supplements (experimental group) showed reduced anxiety. The control group (receiving placebo) showed wither the same or increased level of anziety.

• After reading the research articles, the experiments of the supplements showed that while the experiment group, which received the kava supplement, was prov-en to have reduced signs of anxiety based on the Hamilton Anxiety scale. The control group showed little to no changes in their anxiety levels. Even with little changes to anxiety levels, the participants were still rated high according to the Hamilton Anxiety Scale. Which concluded that the participants were still suffering from anxiety.
