As I look at my desk, I see my pile of books, my laptop with an overload of files on my desktop, and my calendar full of things I’m doing for the next two weeks. I sit down and all of the worry comes at me full force. How am I going to get all of these things done today? As I work on getting things done, my focus goes in several directions. Thinking about what I said to my friend yesterday, if I have enough food in my fridge to last me until the weekend when I go grocery shopping. I’m stressed out and worried about things that I don’t need to have done until two weeks from now. Does this sound familiar to you? This feeling is called anxiety. You may have heard of this from people who have to have things a certain way, and may have said that they had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Though a lot of people think it is very common and not something very serious, about 2.2 million people in the U.S. are affected by OCD every year. (Anxiety, n.p.) This is about one third of people affected by panic disorders. Do you find yourself avoiding situation that make you nervous or interfere with a certain routine that you do? According to (Anxiety, n.p.), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is described as a person that is controlled by reoccurring thoughts and “rituals”. People who have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder struggle with having to do something over and over again a certain way. An example of a “ritual” that would be considered an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is if a person is fearful of germs. If the person washes their hands a certain amount of times a day and avoids germs at all costs, possibly being so severe that the person fears going outside, This would be considered as an obsessive compulsive disorder. The symptoms of nervousness like sweating, increased heart rate, and dizziness (What, n.p.) can lead to more stressful situations that could make OCD conditions worse for the person trying to overcome the obsessive thoughts of a certain “ritual”.(Anxiety,
