However, he plays an enormous part in Christopher’s academic future. He is the proctor for Christopher’s A-level math exam. This is terribly important to Christopher because math plays a considerable part in his life. He describes fear as, “mathematically constant” (136). Math is his safe place.…
The article I chose to complete my research on is “Math Anxiety”, by Dr. Ken Shore. I looked through several articles and found this one interesting. This article is not only about math anxiety from a student perspective, but teachers as well. I chose this because I have 11 year old twins and feel this will give me skills that can assist with me helping them with homework in the future. Dr. Shore’s explains that most people who have math anxiety are lacking confidence in their ability to complete the task.…
The definition of mathematics anxiety is is a phenomenon that is often considered when examining students' problems in mathematics. In the article “ Stop Telling Kids You’re Bad At Math” by Petra Bonfert-Taylor it talks about how in today’s society we are giving a bad image of mathematics which is causing children to have anxiety. Studies have shown that students and children tind to get the mathematics anxiety (MA) from teachers mainly, but can get it from parents. “we are passing on from generation to generation the phobia for mathematics and with that are priming our children for mathematical anxiety.…
In this process, the student first solves the problem and verbalizes the processes used, then writes he step-by-step process and identifies it on the model.” (Miles and Forchs, p. 6). While the teacher is helping the student along, he or she can monitor what areas the student might be struggling with. If the teacher is instructing a large classroom, this strategy might be better done in small groups. There is considerable evidence to indicate a that verbalizing upper level math problems has a pos6itive impact.…
Today, many adults view word problems as the least favorite aspect of math problems; however, that may all change in the future due to today’s students receiving thorough instruction on word problems through the use of teachers using the Common Core Initiative. In order for students to appreciate word problems they must first understand what the problem is asking them solve and they must also understand the information that the word problem has given them. The eight mathematical practices teach students to understand math problems and to analyze the problems. The first step in helping students with math is to show them how to think mathematically.…
We all had things we are afraid of and sometimes we find ourselves in a situation that force us to face our deepest fears. Tell about a time when you had to face one of your greatest fears. I am afraid of math cause I couldn’t get it and I had to learn it and I have to practice it order to get it…
Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Every opportunity to move ahead I was given, I used. When I was given the chance to move up from Algebra II to pre-calculus, I studied for hours every day up until the day of the test came. “Beep! Beep!…
Grade anxiety causes students to be more nervous and feel uneasy on or during their test or exams, it may be uncomfortable to the students but this is how they really feel. According to Stern (2013), “Having an anxiety to perform academically may lead to excessive anxiety, eating disorders or worry behaviors such as lying, cheating and burnout”. He concluded that anxiety has a negative impact on students. On the other hand, having anxiety is also important because it can have a positive effect in the student’s performance that can lead to higher grades. It is important not to have too much discomfort because too much worry may lead to depression.…
Students who do not establish a solid foundation in mathematical concepts often carry these conceptual deficiencies into middle and high school (Nelson, 2014). Little (2009) noted that deficiencies in mathematical concepts usually emerge in elementary school “and continue as students’ progress through secondary school, typically performing over two grade levels behind their peers” (p. 3). Little attributed this phenomenon to poor mathematical instruction that covers too wide a scope of skills and concepts, causing the students to be unable “to achieve a sufficient conceptual understanding of the core concepts that underlie operations and algorithms” (p.3). Conceptual understanding is necessary for problem solving, and students are unable to be academically successful in mathematics without these…
The time I transitioned from middle school to high school it all started in 8th grade when I was only 14 years old. Culture shock is making a transition from familiar to an unfamiliar setting. First the most difference was the difficulty of the work. But I was excited to start high school.…
Often times the rote memorization of mathematical problems lead to the stress and anxiety of students. As Jill Barshay says in her argument, “A 2013 University of Chicago study found that the working memory portion of the brain becomes blocked in stressed students and they cannot access the math facts that they know.” The timed tests in which teachers use cause students to experience extreme stress. Although the timed tests help teachers better understand how well the student has mastered the material, it often causes the student an unfortunate amount of stress. The stress and anxiety caused by these timed tests build up over time and confidence drops drastically.…
When I was little I loved school, starting in pre-k all the way till middle school I always felt that I had something to look forward to on the drive to school, even though I didn't know what the day would hold. I went to Southmoor elementary and it was a really good time. I always hear about people who peaked in highschool and that it's such a terible thing, but I definitely peaked in elementary school. School was genuinely easy and I had fun while I was there. One event that really set the path for the rest of my educational path was being put into the HGT program when I was in 1st grade.…

Are there coping mechanisms that can be taught to a student that can be used successfully during high anxiety testing situations? The purpose of this study is to test various teaching techniques and coping mechanisms for students to see if they reduce student test anxiety. I want to use the information that I gather to create a template that teachers can use as a guide when creating lesson plans. The present…
My childhood memories regarding learning mathematics has been for the most part positive from 6th grade onwards. From 1st grade to 5th grade I was not conscientious so at times math tests produced anxiety but math was, at the same time, easier and simpler back then. I recall being the fastest person to state the multiplication tables in 4th grade. During 6th to 8th grade, although I was not necessarily the smartest, I landed at the top of the class in advance math since I was very hard working. However in 9th grade I recalled a horrific incident.…
