Anxiety is something that every person has had to endure. Stress is a natural part of life and we all have to learn how to handle stress. There are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with stress. When we do not develop healthy ways of overcoming stress then anxiety disorders are developed. There are several types of anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder. “Anxiety disorders are insidious, with a chronic clinical course, low rates of recovery, and relatively high probabilities of recurrence” (Bruce, 2008).
One type of anxiety is generalized anxiety disorder. “People with generalized anxiety disorder experience excessive anxiety under most circumstances and worry about practically anything” (Comer, 2009, p. 98). This disorder is very common and people may experience it at some point in their life. This disorder may cause people to be at a constant state of restlessness, have difficulty sleeping, and experience muscle tension. In order to be diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder you must experience these symptoms for at least six months. There are several theories to the cause of this disorder. The sociocultural view tells us that economic stress, societal dangers, and cultural pressure may lead to generalized anxiety disorder. The psychodynamic explanation states that “generalized anxiety disorder may develop when anxiety is excessive and defense mechanisms break down” (Comer, 2009, p.109).
