Anxiety Disorders: A Case Study Of Different Diet Methods

Jody is a 19-year-old who just completed her freshman year of college, far from home. During this year, Jody found out her parents were contemplating divorce. She feels that she could have prevented this if she went to a school closer to home. Her anxiety levels increased throughout the course of the year, especially when she spoke with or even thought about her parents. Because of this high amount of stress and anxiety, Jody noticed that she became very distracted and sad. Her grades, which previously were very strong, had dropped. She went to her schools counciling center to get treatment. Jody realized that her depression was starting to subside and she was more able to focus on her studies after a few therapy sessions. She found that, while exercising, she could block out any negativity so she started to go to the gym and run more frequently. Over the course of a month, she was able to build her way up from running one mile to seven miles per day. Being slightely overweight her whole life, Jody was pleased to hear people complementing on the drastic changes in the way she looked when her weight was dropping. The encouragement from other people gave her motivation to further her weightloss through dieting. In researching different diet methods, Jody found ways to cut back on any foods that could possibly make her put on weight. She had gone to an extreme, cutting out carbohydrates, processed sugars, and fats. On an average day, Jody would eat no more that 400 calories. By the end of the school year, she had lost 70 pounds, making her 120 pounds at a height of 5 feet 10 inches. This drastic weightloss and severely reduced caloric intake caused her to stop menstruating and having dizzy spells, weakness, and easy loss of breath.
