Initial Reflection
Why I Chose My Topic I have had anxiety and depression issues all my life. They have caused me difficulty with making friends, doing the things that I love, and getting the grades that I should. It started with emotional breakdowns and drastic mood swings when I was little. My parents just thought I was being a kid and trying to get my way and, I had “breakdowns” about the stupidest things. What we did not realize was that there was an underlying cause for my erratic behavior. One time in high school, I had a hysterical crying episode on the way to a football game in which I was supposed to march with the band. Anxiety and depression seem to go hand in hand, and one can cause the other. Anxiety symptoms are usually more short term situational and manifest themselves physically, while depression is generally more long term and has more abstract symptoms.
There are six different types of anxiety and two major types of depression with several less common disorders. There is social anxiety, phobias, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. Major Depression (the number one cause of suicide), Bipolar Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder are just a few of the many depressive disorders that affect adults. Anxiety and depression can be linked to some physical medical disorders or issues, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diabetes, and heart disease (Mayo Clinic Staff). A specific treatment could be cognitive behavioral therapy, which is a common type of “talk therapy” with a limited number of meetings with a counselor and focuses on changing thought processes and behaviors.
