Antonio is a four-year-old boy who is enrolled in a play-based preschool class. He has many positive influences in his life. Antonio appears to be typically developing. He has good social skills and likes to play with his peers. He can follow directions and do basic academics that are developmentally appropriate for his age. Antonio follows three-step commands, which according to the CDC, means he is on target developmentally. In addition to that, he can make friends and seems to enjoy playing with others. His parents are attentive to his educational needs and show an interest in him achieving academic success.

When I talk with a child’s parents about any issue they’re having in class, I take into consideration what they know about child development and how their interactions with their child have been in the past. It’s been my experience that parents who are investing time and energy into their child’s education, such as Antonio’s parents, they are more willing to listen to what the best course of action for their child is. I am also willing to accept that even though I believe a play-based environment is the best way for most young children to learn, his parents may still want to focus on traditional academics and I will need to find a way to accommodate them. I can provide some academic materials for them to take home for Antonio as well as a list of educational websites and videos for them to watch together. I will ask though, that they work alongside Antonio and not expect him to complete any sort of worksheets on his own. I will encourage them to take him to museums and the library to check out books and see what types of activities they offer there. The only way to help a child and his family is to work as together and as long as the child’s needs are being taken care of, I will not be overly concerned until Antonio shows signs of
