Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón, the general of the Mexican army, was intelligent, dynamic, ambitious, and egocentric. He was so smart that he dropped out of school and quit his apprenticeship to a merchant because he was intellectually unchallenged. In relation to this, Anna never stopped moving; if he did, he would collapse into a spiral of gambling and wenching. To say the least, he was quite the vehement man. Anna, as described by Donald J. Mabry, had an “immediate concern to be on the winning side in any battle… switching allegiance never troubled him.” Although he was loyal to Mexico during the Texas Revolution, he had a tendency to switch sides.
