Although he was one of the poorest attenders during Galileo’s trial, he was an Inquisitor in 1624. Barberini was later appointed secretary for life and took the position in 1634. Despite “failures on several important diplomatic missions early in his career,” his real power base was as secretary of state where he served just short of fifty years. Much of his immense wealth came from his position as Vice-Chamberlin of the Church. His brother served as cardinal with him, but this did create conflict between his brother and the other cardinal and
