It was made know that he was a womanizer that enjoyed the company of women whilst disliking those of men. The relationship he had with his wife wasn’t pleasant for he disliked her greatly and the mention of his children was brief in the beginning of the story. There was a lack of interaction between any of the fleetingly mentioned characters until he met Anna. At the start of the story Gurov was carefree and unsympathetic but as the interaction between him and Anna Sergeyevna increases he transforms into a loving and caring person capable of compassion. The change within his character is revealed when “his heart contracted, and he understood clearly that for him there was in the whole world no creature so near, so precious, and so important to him;” (9). Previously there wasn’t anything of importance to him now he’s declaring to himself and realising that she filled his whole life now. The audience is made aware that he is capable of being vulnerable when he expresses to Anna his true feelings for her which was something he had never done before. This is done so through the actions of Gurov, in the beginning the audience could conclude that he was thoughtless and self-centered due the reason that he repeatedly cheated on his wife which further revealed his thoughts of women. Once finding love his character greatly contrasts for now he is affectionate, kind and vulnerable. Light was shed on Gurovs character again through his thoughts and feelings. Formerly Gurov greatly disliked women considering them as a lower race but once again transformed into a character that fell in love with a woman.
