Our society has focused on cleanliness as a means to eliminate pathogens in our living environment and perhaps this fixation stems from the ill effects of past experience: where less than sanitary conditions would often result in life-threatening disease. This type of biased thinking is understandable and would most likely be difficult to overcome given the frequency of new strains of viruses that constantly make the news.
