Antihero Characters

An Antihero is someone who has flaws. These flaws may pertain to that of a villain or a dunce. Though these characters were unconventional back in the day, they have gained momentum in today’s world. Characters such as Georgie from Emergency, or Salim from Slumdog Millionaire, or Elwood Dowd from Harvey all have personality traits that we Americans find attractive because of what they do and how they live life. Georgie is someone who has noble intentions, but he’s a drug addict. Salim is a type of character who is violent and lives to survive. Elwood is calm and easy going, but he is an alcoholic. Americans love Antiheros because of the oddities in their personalities.
One of the characters that share this oddity is Georgie from the short story

It’s strange that a kid would have to be the leader of the family at age six after his mother died. It is also strange for a teenager to become a gangster. Salim grew up in a slum, and was considered to be the naughty boy. Once his mother died, Salim led his family, which only included his younger brother Jamal. When Salim was at the orphanage, he sees the bearded man pouring a hot liquid metal into a child’s eye to make him blind. When Jamal sees this he immediately comes up with a plan to escape. When it was Jamal’s turn to come up and “sing”, Salim splashes solution on one of the guy’s face and he and Jamal started running. Salim is seen here taking charge and action as he is the head of his family and cares for his brother greatly. Normally Six year olds don’t splash acid on someone’s face to escape death. In another scene, Salim, Jamal, and Latika run towards a moving train to escape. When Salim and Jamal get on the train, Salim reaches his hand out to Latika. Latika grabs hold of Salim’s hand, but he lets go of her hand. Salim lets go because Latika is insignificant to her. When Salim and Latika reach each other’s hand, it is seen at a low angle of the frame; meaning that the significance of them reaching each other is low. This signifies that Salim doesn’t care about anyone else. He doesn’t care even if Latika gets her eyes taken out. Nevertheless, it is bizarre for a …show more content…
Ever since his mother died, Elwood started seeing an invisible, tall rabbit that has the power to stop time. When Elwood started introducing everyone to Harvey, they all ignored Elwood in fear believing he’s crazy. In one scene Elwood and Harvey are at the bar. A man sits near them and watches as Elwood talks to Harvey looking crazy. It is a deep focus shot of the viewer seeing the expression on the man’s face as he reacts to Elwood and Harvey having a conversation. He then leaves and tells Elwood to pay for his drink. Elwood, being the nice man that he is, says he’ll have Harvey cover for him, which astonishes the man further. Elwood is strangely nice even to the point where it becomes creepy. His alcoholism is what makes him act like this, since he’s calm all the time. Elwood is an alcoholic. In the entire movie he went to the bar many times. The only activity he has is going to the bar with Harvey. This is one flaw he has as an antihero. It is strange that Elwood goes to the bar all the time, but somehow doesn’t get drunk or

The online video The ‘Superpredator’ Scare illustrates the wave of crimes committed by youths in the 1900’s, but mainly depicts the murder of an eleven year old (Robert Sandifer aka “Yummy”) committed by the brothers Craig and Derrick Hardaway in Chicago. The video includes testimonies from criminal analysts and linguistics people to further explain the theory of “superpredators” conducted by John J.DiIulio Jr, and analyze if the study was the explanation to why youth delinquency was occurring, and could be applied to the Hardaway brothers. The term was commonly used throughout America, and DiIulio utilized it to predict that the crime rates of youths would triple through the years, only to conclude that the term “superpredator” and his prediction wasn’t accurate, which resulted in the truth that youth crimes had decreased in the 90’s.…

I have come to a reasonable conclusion that Antigone is directly a round character. In the beginning of the story, she is shown to have both many strengths and weaknesses. As our primary protagonist, she has shown to have a heroic nature, she even stood up against her uncle who is the king. She is also willing to not disgrace her brother's memory by not giving his body a proper burial, she is willing to put her life on the line to do so. However, despite being a strong woman at nature, she has shown to have her own weaknesses as well.…

In literature, no scene of violence exists for its own sake. In the book titled The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini there are many scenes that contain violence, and these violent scenes do not exist for their own sake. The Kite Runner showcases the friendship between Hassan and Amir, and how one disloyal action can lead to years of guilt. The violent scenes in this book include war, murder, fighting, and sexual abuse. All of these scenes all contribute to the overall meaning of the book and each scene impacts the book in a different way.…

Authors purposefully create characters with physical differences that stand out in the characters’ society to enhance the story by representing the character’s potential to accomplish a goal that propels the plot. The physical differences can be seen as imperfections like in the novel, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, who incorporates cleft lips to describe nature of the characters that foreshadows future events. The physical traits play an important role with The Kite Runner and without the usage of unique physical traits, characterization, foreshadowing, and symbolism will not be expressed in the same way. The reader may be confused when the events do not connect to form a coherent understanding. Therefore, Hosseini uses physical differences…

Villains are an interesting bunch in that the same person can be seen as both minor/major, or helpful/dangerous. I guess the same could be said about heroes though. Chuck Klosterman, a best selling author, wrote an essay titled “Electric Funeral,” a chapter of I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined), which details villains of today-different types of technocrats. The three “villains” he mainly focuses on are Perez Hilton, Kim Dotcom, and Julian Assange, who each vary greatly on the spectrum of their acts. Hilton is a blogger who likes to post photoshopped pictures and articles, Dotcom created Megaupload, a website to post copyrighted material illegally, and Assange is the head creator of WikiLeaks.…

There is an almost imperceptible line between friend and enemy. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, “[T]rue friendship is never serene" (Brainy Quote). In fact, the more entwined two individuals become, the greater the possibility that complications such as insecurity, jealousy and competition can arise. Friendship fulfills man’s basic need for love and security; however, it also can involve an unequal balance of needs and wants. In Khaled Hosseini’s seminal work The Kite Runner, Amir and Hassan, two main characters, grow up in pre-Taliban era Kabul, Afghanistan in the 1960-70s.…

The final scene is interesting to the audience as it creates suspense and conveys to the audience many themes, such as sacrifice, destiny, and love. The use of cross-cutting from Jamal’s point of view to Salim’s and even Latika’s creates anticipation for the audience as to what is going to happen. Boyle is purposefully showing the shots of Latika running towards the phone and Salim layering money in the bath tub to create suspense for the audience as the figure out what will happen, and how each scene pieces into the end game of the movie. A scene that was particularly interesting and true to the theme of redemption was Salim’s death scene.…
