ABSTRACT

The inhibition efficiency of an acid extract of Antigonon Leptopus used as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1M HCl medium is inspected by weight loss, temperature and electrochemical studies in the presence and absence of extract . The polarization studies

2.3.1.Determination of corrosion rate

In this present study, the rate of dissolution of metal (CR) is expressed in American units, mpy (mils per year). The corrosion rate was calculated using the following expression (Eq.2).
Corrosion rate (CR) = (534 ×W)/DAT mpy (2)

Where, mpy -mils per year, W -Weight loss in mg, D-Density in g / cm2 (7.9g / cm2 for mild steel) , A-Area in square inch and T- immersion time in hours
2.3.2.Determination of activation energy (Ea)

Ea = - 2.303 RT x slope (3)

Where, Ea is the activation energy, T is the absolute temperature and R is the universal gas constant.

2.4.Electrochemical Method
To analyze the electrochemical feature of corrosion with the help of polarization cell. Polarization cell made up of three electrodes, platinum electrode, mild steel as working electrode and calomel electrode which were immersed in 1M HCl acid in with and with out inhibitor at room temperature

The mild steel specimens, immersed in acid solutions in the presence and absence of inhibitor for 6 hour at room temperature were taken out washed carefully with doubly distilled water and dried. Then the surfaces were analyzed by using Shimadzu FTIR, Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and photographed at appropriate magnification.

3.RESULT AND DISCUSSION
3.1.Preliminary phytochemical screening of 1M HCl extract of Antigonon Leptopus
The results of the preliminary phytochemical screening are given in Table 1. The extract was found to contain alkaloids, terpenoids, Flavanoids, glycosides, Steroids and saponins. Phytochemical screening tests of the AL extract matches with the earlier work done by Johnson Marimuthu @ Antonisamy et al (2012).

    5. CONCLUSIONS Dry waste prawn shell converted to chitin and chitosan by using 3.5% of NaOH and 1N HCl with the temperature range from 20 oC-120 oC in the process of deprotinized, demineralized , decolourized and deacytilated .CMC was synthesized by carboxymethylation, as some of the –OH group of chitosan were substituted by –CH2COOH groups. Carboxymethyl chitosan was used as an adsorbent for the removal of copper from the wastewater. The removal efficiencies of copper were affected by different parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, contact time, initial metal ion concentration, anion and cation.…

When hydrochloric acid was added to the unknown and known solutions, both resulted in no reaction. This also occurred when potassium hydroxide was added to both of the solutions. Barium chloride was then added to the two solutions, which resulted in a cloudy white precipitate from both of the solutions. A cloudy white precipitate also formed when calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate were added to both the unknown and known solutions. These reactivity tests were conducted in order to establish how the unknown compound would react with acids, bases, and salts.…

To start this laboratory experiment, we first collected all the materials necessary including multiple beakers, samples of each solution, metal strips, a salt bridge, alligator clips, and an abrasive sponge. Then 10 mL of CuSO4(aq) and 10 mL of ZnSO4(aq) were placed into separate 250 mL beakers. A copper strip was then placed in the beaker containing CuSO4(aq) and a zinc strip was placed into the beaker with ZnSO4(aq). The two beakers were connected by a salt bridge that consisted of a string soaked in 0.5 M KI solution and each end was placed into each solution.…

    Silver Tarnishing Lab

    • 335 Words
    • 2 Pages

The tarnishing of silver is due to a chemical reaction between silver and hydrogen sulfide, producing silver sulfide and hydrogen gas. The balanced chemical equation is 2Ag (s) + H2S (g) → Ag2S (s) + H2. This is a single replacement reaction. This reaction most commonly occurs through contact with hydrogen sulfide in the air - although direct contact with substances that contain sulfur can cause tarnishing. Silver tarnishes very quickly when it is exposed to air that contains high levels of ozone, sulfur, or hydrogen sulfide.…

During the experiment for part B and C different volumes of copper (II) sulfate, sodium hydroxide, and sodium sulfate were added to the test tubes to produce solution with different pH, absorbances, and precipitates. The equation for the calibration curve was y=3.5067x + 0.0155 and was used in part B of the calculations. The average Ksp calculated for the Solubility Solutions was -7.12x10-13 and the average Ksp calculated for Cu(OH)2 was 5.04x10-7. The differences between the two Ksp were due to the different solvent use part B and C because the reactions impacted on solubility. The average Ksp for the Solubility Solutions should not have been negative, but because the equilibrium concentration of Cu+ for Solution 1 was -0.00356, this causes the Ksp of Cu(OH)2 for Solution 1 to be negative, and the overall average to be negative.…

These elements are said to be easily oxidized. Generally speaking, metals including sodium, magnesium, and iron are easily oxidized”. Also, according to wiseGEEK.com, galvanized steel “[...] is steel that has gone through a chemical process to keep it from corroding. The steel gets coated in layers of zinc oxide because this protective metal does not get rusty as easily”. Comparing the research on oxidation and galvanization with the reactants in the lab, it is probable to conclude that the (aluminum) steel wool may have corroded through oxidation when exposed to oxygen and possibly moisture.…

Despite its ancient origins, Sophocles’ play Antigone provides a case study through which to examine issues of politics, power, sovereignty, and justice. The final of Sophocles’ trilogy “Three Theban Plays,” the first record of Antigone is around 442 BCE, during the height of Athenian democracy. The play centers around Antigone’s decision to disobey her future father-in-law and king, Creon, in order to give her brother Polyneices, who is branded a traitor and is forbade a proper burial. One of Oedipus and Jocasta’s living two children, Antigone flaunts Creon’s laws and gives her brother a proper burial. Antigone expects to be put to death for her crime but instead Creon orders her to be shut in a cave, where she will live out her final days.…

Widely used all over the world, wrought iron fencing and railings can last for decades. Even with the best craftsmanship, iron is not immune to rust. A result of the natural reaction between iron and oxygen when moisture is present, rust will eventually overtake an entire iron structure until nothing else is left unless adequate prevention measures are taken. Here to explain how to protect your wrought iron gates and fences this winter is Elsmere Ironworks, Cincinnati, OH's leading iron fabricators. Galvanization: For corrosion protection that lasts a lifetime, ask Elsmere Ironworks about hot-dip galvanization for your outdoor fencing and railings.…

Introduction Silver, like gold, is found in a native state; frequently too it occurs as an alloy containing gold, which is recognized, when the silver is dissolved in nitric acid, as the black sediment or oxide of gold. Arsenic and antimony are found also alloyed with it. Several of the ores of lead and copper contain silver. As silver is a precious metal often used for coins, its mining has historically often been lucrative. As with other precious metals such as gold, newly discovered deposits of silver ore have sparked silver rushes of miners seeking their fortunes.…

Almost $200 billion is used for fixing and preventing the damage done by corrosion each year in the United States. The process of corrosion costs important money and resources. Iron and steel are the most important resources that corrode. About 20% of the steel and iron produced in the United States is used to repair bridges or pipelines that have suffered from the effects of corrosion. Corrosion occurs when metals, through chemical reactions, are broken down (“Corrosion,” 2008, paras. 1-2).…
