Creon denies Polyneices, Antigone’s brother, burial rights and Antigone feels obligated to give him the proper burial because it is extremely important to her and for him. She is willing to go against Creon while her sister is not, due to the lack of her selfless qualities. Because her family is so important to her, she tells her sister that, “no man shall say that I betrayed my brother” (Sophocles 2). Antigone would rather honor her brother than obey Creon because she feels that his burial is imperative to Creon’s rules. In response to this, Ismene recounts all of the terrible things that have happened to their family. She asserts that “if [she] had been the mother of children or if [her] husband died, [she] would never have taken this ordeal upon herself” (line 996-998). This “ordeal” of not being prepared to violate the law to bury her child or husband, but nevertheless, being prepared to do so for her brother is rather contradictory. We may, therefore, interpret that she is forsaking the belief of loyalty to her bloodline expressed earlier in the play, when she urges Ismene to “Decide. / No one will ever convict me for a traitor” (Sophocles pg. 61, lines 52-56). This quote shows that there is a ban against citizens of Thebes burying their relatives after they have passed. Contrary to Sophocles, Antigone believes that family is more important than authority as she relentlessly buries her brother while aware of the law she is breaking. With this in mind, Antigone is later accused of civil disobedience, or the refusal of a citizen to obey a certain law enforced by a ruler or the government.…
