Isaac Asimov once forenamed, “ Never let your sense of morals get in the way of doing what's right.” Morals define who people are and convey the truth and principles of equitable conduct. The tragic story of Antigone was written by a Greek dramatist, Sophocles in 441 B.C. In that time period, deities were present in everyday life and there was a robust anarchy in the city of Thebes. The desire to please the gods was prevailing in ancient times because people believed in forthright prophecies and lived inferior of the permanent underworld. In Antigone the main character, Antigone betrayed one of her family members but she obtained morals and ethical codes to herself and to the divine authority. The choices …show more content…
As one can see, I created two masks that coincide with characters in the book. The character that I chose to analyze was Antigone, but I made a mask for Creon to act as a comparison to Antigone to portray my selected theme to a greater extent. Attributes to the Antigone mask include: makeup, red lips, dirt, and a mirror. In addition, the characteristics of Creon’s mask include; teardrops, cracked lips, an eyepatch, and lastly a mirror. The left side of both masks contains the weakness or flaw that the character acquires. On the left side of Antigone’s face, she is wearing makeup that represents her character as a women. In 441 B.C a woman was looked down upon and they were seen as weak and enervated. This aspect of being a woman decelerated Antigone from receiving the respect she deserves. In the book Ismene exclaims, “ We are only women; we cannot fight with men, Antigone” (Sophocles 1070). The left side of Creon’s face possesses five tears of blood from the five family members that he lost due to death from betrayal, morals, and ethical codes. Creon’s weakness and consequence are existing alone without anyone in his direct bloodline. Antigone betrayed Creon, so she payed the price of death, hence why her lips are blood red. Creon betrayed the gods, so he is paying the price of living alone, hence why his lips are cracked because no one will ever kiss, love, or talk to him again. The right side of the masks betoken the …show more content…
I learned that Antigone was very foolhardy and imprudent because she was willingly able to stand up to her uncle against all of his morals. Antigone did not fear death, she feared leaving this earth without doing the honorable thing of burying her brother. I can easily relate to that trait of Antigone. In relation to Antigone, I wish to make a difference in the world and leave my life, touching the lives of others and being remembered as a positive role model. In other words, my morals are very similar to Antigone’s. Antigone’s tragic flaw is her counterclaim use of words. She was able to talk back to her uncle and stand up for what is right while being threatened her life. Antigone was loyal to herself and the gods because her actions depicted her morals please herself and the gods. Antigone’s motivation was to bury her brother and live under the rule of the gods not a king himself. One thing that can be learned from Antigone is to speak your mind and stand up for what is right because atrocious karma will come around to those in the wrong, and you will be rewarded in some way. Moreover, my theme is betrayal, morals, and ethical codes. I learned that this theme can be interpreted in many ways because everyone person and character has different morals. This theme was represented by Antigone when she says, “ That must be your excuse, I
