Antigone Drama Analysis

In putting together the piece that we performed before our friends and classmates, I believe that we did not consider the enormous task that lay before us. I think that we began the process with heedless optimism in our ability to create and successfully perform a show largely of our own creation; I know for my part I shared this optimism. However, looking back at the process as a whole I think that the problems in the final performance were mirrored throughout the development of production. One of the major issues throughout was widely unequal engagement and care. During the process of choosing the piece for final performance the class was deeply split between those with strong feelings and those without. Furthermore, among those with a …show more content…
Chiefly, I think I learned, and I hope we all learned, that there is a reason that these plays were written as tragedies and not comedies. Namely, that comedy is ill-adapted to convey the messages of these great works, especially mediocrely performed comedy. The message of, say, Antigone is lost if satyrs distract the audience; that of Prometheus Bound if satyrs heckle intentionally bad actors; etc. etc. Our performance had no message. This was most clearly evident in scenes such as Alcestis; it became purely political, losing all sense of the message of the power of friendship. To entertain and audience is indeed an important task, but it is hardly an end goal. This performance has taught me that much. I doubt that any of the comic scenes we performed had any real impact, but I have no doubt that the lone serious scene may have and definitely would have if not sandwich between comic scenes. The best comedy might be able to convey a message, but even a mediocre tragedy

While researching the play I found that there were many instances were the play was not successful because it all either all wit or all physical humor—the translation of found in The Longman Anthology Theater and Drama: A Global Perspective is effective because it represents some harmony between the two types of comedy. There is low comedy and high comedy, but within Lysistrata there are instances that can be regarded as both. Low comedy and high comedy invoke different types of laughs from individual members of the audience. High comedy is regarded as humor that is based on and reliant on intellect. It has more refined taste and is often witty; this include puns, sarcasm, dramatic irony, parodies, wit, and saturnalia.…

“But a tyrant says and does what he pleases. That’s his great joy.” (Antigone 506-507) Antigone to Creon said this quote after Antigone was caught for trying to bury her brother Polynices. The quote is very important to the overall story of Antigone because it revolves around the theme of family verse family and also the theme of right verse wrong. Creon is Antigone’s uncle but they don’t necessarily see eye to eye with each other, which is why she calls Creon a tyrant.…

I was able to see a different approach on how to grab the audience’s attention from the other director’s performance. The scene at the same time was very comical, but also held you on the edge of your seat with its high tension and wonderful transformation of a relationship between two characters on stage. This really grabbed my attention and taught me that a transformation of a relationship on stage really enriches the performance. Overall, the knowledge I gained from this activity in class really helped me establish a foundation and base for the mechanics of…

Despite its ancient origins, Sophocles’ play Antigone provides a case study through which to examine issues of politics, power, sovereignty, and justice. The final of Sophocles’ trilogy “Three Theban Plays,” the first record of Antigone is around 442 BCE, during the height of Athenian democracy. The play centers around Antigone’s decision to disobey her future father-in-law and king, Creon, in order to give her brother Polyneices, who is branded a traitor and is forbade a proper burial. One of Oedipus and Jocasta’s living two children, Antigone flaunts Creon’s laws and gives her brother a proper burial. Antigone expects to be put to death for her crime but instead Creon orders her to be shut in a cave, where she will live out her final days.…

The play was presented in a way that the viewers could relate to completely. Unfortunately, we judge and draw conclusions about others just by their looks or their attitude, but we have no idea what that person can be going through. This topic was perfectly outlined by the display of these 6 people’s lives. We all have issues and demons that we have to fight with. By saying this I am trying to prove that the reflection of our experiences and the fostering of community were the 2 “Values of Art” within this play.…

The actors had a lot of energy that undoubtedly captured the viewer’s attention. Each actor had a certain characteristic that made him or her truly fascinating to watch. They were able to interact with each and every audience member. This left me, a viewer, who was in the middle of the room, feeling as though I was in the play. The plays story may have been their biggest obstacle, however.…

There are no hard conclusions or perfect portrayals when discussing plays, mainly because every rendition has unique features that make it stand apart from the others. Oftentimes, a performance of a play cannot be said to be better than other performances, because there simply is not an algorithm that can objectively rank all productions of a particular play. The subjective nature of performance art is what makes it so interesting and different from other academic studies. There aren’t any exact guidelines or procedures we must follow to become good actors or to portray characters perfectly. Only suggestions and techniques exist to help us improve on our representation of the objective content published about a character by the playwright.…

While two plotlines may share some similarities and differences, Antigone, written by Sophocles, and Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, share an eerie resemblance. The two plays share this alikeness because of the main couples, Antigone and Haemon in Antigone and Romeo and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. The couples’ lifespans throughout the play display complementary characteristics that offer comfort. An overall comparison of the couples reveal eerie resemblances, but a more detailed analysis reveals the contrast. The couples of Antigone and Romeo and…

We started the exam by playing the game of “King Says” which I believe has a very close meaning behind the game which relates to our story of Antigone. We had to only do the things that the king says, and if the someone does something that the king did not say, then they will have to die in a dramatic way. Not only is it a good warm up activity, it also helps you learn more about how Antigone felt that she fulfilled her goal when she was finally disobeyed the king and buried her brother Polynices. After that we then did the second warm up activity which was “Steal the law balloon from the blind king” where we have to steal the law balloon while avoiding getting hit by the power balloon that is controlled by the blindfolded king. I think this is a good representation on how King Creon in the play is blinded by the power he has which ended up making him lonely and miserable without any of his other family members.…
