Antigone and Paikea: A Comparison
Despite having different cultural backgrounds, people can be very similar to one another. In life, people have choices to be helpful or hurtful to their people. Those who choose to help their people go out of their way to fix issues, and their family. These actions are not only helpful to family but their community as well. In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Antigone, the protagonist, sacrifices herself for a greater cause. Antigone is similar to Paikea, the protagonist in Caro’s movie whalerider, as she too sacrifices herself for a greater cause. Antigone wanted to bury polyneices even though she knew the consequence would be death because of King Creon’s decree. Antigone is determined to bury brother because she loves him, just as she loves her family. Antigone speaks to her sister Ismene, in an attempt to convince her to do the right thing by burying their brother. Antigone says, “That may be your excuse, I suppose. But as for me, I will bury the brother I love” (Sophocles 192). Antigone is telling her sister that she loves their brother so she will bury him and she questions Ismene’s devotion to their family. Regardless of possible reasons to not bury her brother, she is going to bury him with or without Ismene because she loves her family. Antigone demonstrates her love and devotion for her family and her brother, which shows that she is family-oriented. Antigone values all of her family, she loves them and will do what is needed to ensure that her family is taken care of. This is similar to Paikea when she demonstrated being family-oriented. Paikea’s grandfather, Koro, had called upon their ancestors in his deep sadness after he was not able to find a new leader for their tribe, which was dismantling. In result of seeing her family in chaos, Paikea calls upon the ancestors because they hadn’t come for Koro, and the ancestors were her family’s and tribe’s last hope. Antigone and Paikea both sacrifice themselves for a greater cause and they both share the same quality of love and care for their families. It is important in life to make sacrifices because it helps others by providing courage and strength where the community lacks it and because it is simply right to do. It is also important to be family-oriented because family is the foundation of support and unconditional love. Family is one of the most important relationships to have in life. Without family, there is no one else who will always be supportive and helpful no matter what. Family is so important because they are one of the few people that will be there through thick and thin, so it is important to love and care for them.
