Hark! I hear the muted sound of Death approaching to take me as His living dead!
It was so many eons ago, there I walked along the river bed in the deafening silence, awaiting the boat slowly approaching.
Death is its captain.
I stopped, and he graciously pulled up to me; come to take me to my eternal slumber.

I can feel death courting me as he wraps me in his arms.
He slowly and agonizingly moves down my body, kissing every inch.
As the heady allure of death overwhelms me
I feel him enter me,
Moving slowly at first, then faster.
Then I hear my silent scream of completion, and the heavy lightness of my heart numbs my feelings to the touch of death.

Oh how I remember as if it were yesterday.
My two brothers from different side, fighting for the right of the kingdom.

Kreon, Thebe’s ruler, stuffed with pride and arrogance, calls one brother friend, the other a traitor to the kingdom.
He dictates, Polyneices to be left unburied for the carrions and the other, an honorable burial.

I was proud, stubborn, defiant, and unremorseful.
A true family woman, I decided to bury my brother Polyneices because I cared for the laws of the Gods; not Keon’s.
I begged Ismene for help in burying our brother.
Mightily weak, she says no. She was the loyal opposition and would not break the law.
She was passive, and docile.

I did it!
My deeds justified by the Gods,
I buried Polyneices.
I feared and hoped- but I got caught.
Kreon was spitting fire.
I had overstep the bounds this time.
My punishment, I was to be locked away in a sealed tomb, to become one of the living dead.
Kreon’s son Haimon, my bridegroom, was outraged.
He tried to reason with his father, but, Kreon being a tyrant saw my actions as

Was Creon “equally” justified in his “rightness”? I don’t think so at all. From the early sentences you get the impression that he is trying to set laws to reestablish his power. “Conductors may of course be instruments as well as victims of the divine lightning.” In Sophocles’ Antigone, the protagonist, Antigone, is both the instrument and the victim of the divine lightning. The suffering imposed upon Antigone by Creon allows her to discover the importance of democracy. She becomes both the spark that ignites the electricity of social change and the martyr who dies for the flame she kindled. Through dialogue that displays expressions of civil disobedience, idealism, and martyrhood caused by Creon’s tyranny, Antigone reveals her role as a catalyst of the tragic vision in Sophocles’ play.…
