It was the end of another long school day when I first heard those words. My kindergartener self and my then first grade sister were squabbling in the backseat of our grandmother’s car about something so insignificant that I can’t even recall what it was. What my grandmother told us has stayed with us forever, “Be nice to each other. That’s the only sister you have.” These words were often repeated, also by our mother, although in a more exasperated manner when our voices were raised in a fight, and holds true today. Although my sister and I couldn’t be any more different, we can depend on each other in this crazy world.

Nonetheless, when Antigone needed help, she came to her sister, whose refusal can even be seen as an act of love as the interpretations of the play is dependent upon an actor’s portrayal. By then, both sisters had witness the demise of nearly their entire family, Ismene was trying to cling onto who she still had. When it was clear her sister was ordered to die, she attempted to implicate herself in the crime to die by her

Being a strong person and acting courageous eventually inspired her sister, Ismene, to trust her decision to seek justice for their brother. At the start of the play Ismene thought Antigone was crazy for trying to bring justice to Polyneices’ body and spirit after his death; however, once Antigone is taken before the king, Ismene can’t bear to lose her sister and be all alone so she goes to the king and says, “I did it. If she is with me now, I share the blame with her and will bear it also” (Sophocles p 42 657-658). Antigone’s leadership and courage allowed Ismene to trust her sister and follow her lead even if it would lead to death. She considered her family to be more important than what the king declared or what the punishments would be. She hoped that her sister would also remember her devotion to her family and therefore conclude that Antigone’s endeavor was the right response to the king’s order against Polyneices’ burial. She also appealed to the more universal claim of the greater picture of the dead and the gods. She said that because the dead are forever it is better to please them than those on earth- in this case king Kreon. In this way Antigone inferred that Ismene’s choice to not help her would have negative consequences for her even after death.…

Ancient Greece is known for many things; their philosophies, legends and most importantly, theater. Greek theater is one of the major features of Greek culture, as it displayed various aspects of how the Greeks led their lives. Antigone is a tragedy written by the playwright Sophocles, and is the third of his three Theban plays. Each of these plays have common elements and themes which Sophocles displays using his characters. An example of this is shown in the way Sophocles highlights the detrimental effects of gender inequalities found in early Greek culture through the character Ismene, portraying her as a stereotypical female character who believes she is not strong enough to stand up to man, unable to make decisions for herself and how…
