11/2/2017 Anticipatory socialization in the use of social media in public relations is an article written by Maureen Taylor and Michael L. Kent (2010). This article discussed public relations tactics and examined the effectiveness of social media on public relations students’ understanding of the value and power of social media in public relations field. Most of public relations tactics data were collected from the theoretical frame of the socialization literature (Jablin, 1987). The conductors of this study provided an introduction on the power of social media usage to improve public relations practice. The socialization literature is extensive with more than 300 articles distributed on the subject in communication, psychology, and business journals. Socialization is conceptualized as the procedure through which people relate to and seek after a profession. The part of the literature that is most pertinent for this article is the main phase of the socialization procedure: anticipatory socialization. The researchers mentioned that Jablin (1985) later expanded the thesis of anticipatory socialization. Anticipatory socialization happens before an individual joins an organization. Amid the anticipatory socialization stage, individuals find out about work in general, how organizations work, what an occupation does in its work, and what sorts of organizations do that particular kind of work. However, there are many other ways that student can learn from them. For instance, they see characters on TV or in the films that describe public relations.
