a. Briefly describe practices that are contributing to antibiotic resistance.
First, it must be understood that antibiotic resistance happens to some degree no matter what since bacteria are constantly evolving; resistance can only be slowed down but can never be completely stopped. The misuse (e.g. incorrect dosage or duration of dose) and unnecessary prescription of antibiotic drugs among humans are major contributing factors to resistance. The overuse …show more content…
Antibiotic resistance is also spreading via environmental transfers as bacteria are traveling from place to place (e.g. through wind, water, airplanes and people via coughing, sneezing, or unwashed/unclean hands or surfaces) (Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics, 2014). Resistant bacteria can further spread from crop or animal meat into bacteria within humans via food consumption (CDC, …show more content…
vaccination, basic personal hygiene, safe food preparation) is one major way to fight antibiotic resistance since less infection means using less antibiotics which decreases the likelihood of resistance developing and/or spreading; it is also important for individuals to take their full dose of antibiotics within the time frame in which they are prescribed and to not share antibiotics. Tracking can also help fight resistance by identifying risk factors and strategies to overcome risk factors. Furthermore, improving antibiotic prescribing (including in animals) by reduce unnecessary prescriptions can help slow down resistance; developing new drugs and diagnosing tests can help treat the evolving bacteria and identify just exactly how it is evolving (CDC, 2015).
