In 1921, the United States recorded 15, 520 American lives were lost due to Diphtheria (“Diphtheria”). The year of 1921 was a year that carried panic and anxiety from all parents with children suffering from the dreadful illness. Consequently, an Anti-Vaccination Movement began in America during the mid 1970’s (“History of Anti-Vaccination”). Parents of various religions and beliefs began to believe that the Diphtheria vaccine caused neurological disorders, eventually involving the media, making the belief wider known. The movement not only set horrible, messy lawsuits in motion against vaccine manufacturers, but also caused people to be more susceptible to diseases since they were not being properly vaccinated yearly. In July 1999, the United States public health organization decided to decrease the amount of thimerosal in vaccinations because it was rumored to cause disorders such as autism (“History of Anti-Vaccination”).
