My high school in DC went out and protested with thousands of other High School Students around the city; I wish I could have marched with them. Located in Virginia Park, 12th Street is the center of Detroit’s predominately African-American inner city, and plays a major role in the night life of Detroit…

Abe Lincoln is Dead, and You are not Free: The Memphis Riot of 1866 and Its Roots in the Social Upheaval of the Reconstruction Nathin J. Birkrem Abstract On 1 May 1866 in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, an altercation between black Union soldiers and Memphis police officers started a chain reaction that eventually brought about what has come to be known as the Memphis Riots of 1866. The group of amicably intoxicated soldiers reacted negatively when told by a small group of officers to break up their party, and although no one was seriously injured, the situation quickly escalated to the point where shots were fired on both sides (Carden 2). This incident, however, was not the cause of the Memphis Riots.…

Very little has reformed from the earlier few decades when reexamining the 1992 election race for the presidency. Sulking tempers, outbursts, and verbal abuse may have reached all-time highs between candidates; however, the promises made and ideas imposed by each elective have not budged an inch. Per the National Bureau of Economic Research, ethnic diversity seems to be the major determinant for rioting in L.A., while little evidence points to poverty in the community as a large cause. (Glaeser 1) Media coverage of the riots would provide ample election exposure for the running nominees. It was this very same ethnic diversity that brings about the Black Lives Matter(BLM) activist movement in 2013, in response to the acquittal of George…

I've spent most of the weekend out on the streets marching, and I wanted to share a few of my thoughts while they're still fresh. cw: anti-fascist propaganda, me mansplaining, white supremacy in politicized feminism, incoherent rambling Friday, I joined my comrades in taking the streets for #ResistFromDayOne protests, and it was beautiful. Rather than applauding the lies and empty promises of self-interested politicians at the inauguration (even / especially in a hypothetical Clinton victory), it was a decentralized movement, a coming together of indigenous activists, socialists, anti-fascists, BLM, anti-capitalists, and young people. It was a beautiful display of unity, comradary, public art, dissent, and of the will of the people to move beyond our broken political system to make the…

On the Wednesday after the unexpected president-elect result, anti-Trump protests began to form in downtown LA and on a couple college campuses. And though it was a school night, my parents made an exception for me to go with my friends to the UCLA campus protests because it was, and I quote from my parents, “a historic day.” As we marched on in solidarity in the spirit of equality and justice, we sympathized with those who shared their grievances and resentments. People of all races, ages, gender, and occupations walked together on the campus walkways and onto the streets of downtown LA. For a moment I thought to myself, “what an incredible movement of people united together to fight the social injustices of hostility and hateful rhetoric.”…
