During the Obama administration, Title IX of the Education Amendments Acts of 1972, which was originally created to ban sex discrimination in schools, was interpreted by courts and the US Justice and Education Departments to prohibit discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming students. However, currently the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Education, which previously enforced Title IX, will not investigate any claims of anti-trans discrimination under the direction of DeVos. This reduces the protection that trans students receive to only state and district policies which vary vastly by locality. Though this may not affect students in California majorly, since the School Success and Opportunity Act ensures transgender youth to have the opportunity to fully participate in schools, the rest of the country’s trans students are left without federal protection.
Despite the fact that the concept of transgenderism predates written history, many people fail to truly grasp what it means to be trans.
