Anti Smoking Commercial Analysis

Cigarettes have been a detriment to society for as long as they have been around. Before the 60’s cigarettes were advertised to everyone and were even prescribed by doctors. I will be doing my essay over an anti cigarette campaign that was brought to my attention through a commercial about children and the detrimental effects of secondhand smoke on their health. A student at the Arts Institute of Tampa named Dominic Smith made the commercial. This video with the title “Anti Smoking Commercial” can be found on Dominic’s YouTube channel. In this commercial, a child is shown as she grows up around a parent who is a heavy smoker. This video accurately shows the negative effects that secondhand smoke creates, as the child grows older. Many children …show more content…
Many children are blessed whit that luxurious lifestyle but sadly many kids are not. This video starts out with a young girl who is perfectly healthy but her mom has just recently picked up a smoking addiction. The commercial later cuts to a few years in the future where the girl now has an inhaler tied to her neck that stays there till the end of the video where the girl is 22. This shows the viewer that she will most likely have life long asthma due to her mother’s blatant disregard of her daughter’s health. Asthma is also another one of the many detrimental effects that so many children have to go through due to secondhand smoke exposure. For many children asthma is a daily routine that they have to deal with and “Asthma attacks are perhaps the most well-known health effect of secondhand smoke exposure among children. Secondhand smoke exposure increases the frequency of episodes and the severity of symptoms in asthmatic children. The EPA estimates that 200,000 to 1,000,000 asthmatic children have their condition worsened by exposure to secondhand smoke” ("Health Effects Of Secondhand Smoke On Children). Many children are handicapped by this asthma and are unable to participate in every day life activates such as recreational sports, playing outside and literally being able to breathing. The asthma however, …show more content…
Normally starting out as a social event and can eventually end in huge medical bills, painful and time consuming medical treatments and even death. Cigarette addiction is extremely powerful and does not cater to age, race, sexual orientation, or gender. However, when an adult exposes their child to secondhand smoke they become more than just a smoker, they become a actual source of cancer and pain to their children. This video was made to show smoking parents how selfish and detrimental they are being toward their child. Secondhand smoke is a very real issue and should not be taken lightly because it kills thousands every single year. Weather it be lung cancer, asthma, heart disease, or just a chance of future addiction smoking kills millions. Children deserve a better life and should be given a chance to live a normal, healthy and smoke free life. Please do not be a parent who wrongly subjects their children to the life threatening effects of secondhand

This ad is very creative in the message it's attempting to convey. It takes a tobacco companies' advertisements and cleverly uses it to present possible outcomes for smokers, or those that may decide to start smoking. Additionally, it adds subtle additions such as the glasses, which in the original ad suggested a level of coolness for smokers, and the wording of the Surgeon General's message typically attached to a pack of cigarettes. The author uses pathos to induce an emotional reaction, namely fear of cancer, as the overhaul ad suggests. It furthers this reaction with the use of the glasses and Surgeon General's message, suggesting that smoking is not cool, and that smoker's potential is impacted when deciding to smoke.…

“Each day 2000 U.S children begin to smoke, and about 1/3rd of them will die from Tabaco related illness” (Gary). This surprising number is greatly influenced by one thing, advertisements. Ads play a large role of influence in our Dailey lives and we may not even know it. In Gary Ruskin and Juliet Schors article “Every Nook and Cranny: The Dangerous Spread of Commercialized Culture” they discuss the impact of advertisements in today’s culture. They bring up the relationship between ads and children and the impact it has on their lives.…

They want their audience to believe that, unless they quit smoking, they run the risk of terminal illness and leaving their child alone. When the narrator speaks directly to the audience at the end of the commercial he says, “If this is how your child feels after losing you for a minute, just imagine if they lost you for life” (YouTube). The purpose of this is to cause the viewers to think about the health and safety of their children and to possibly guilt them into breaking their bad habit. In the beginning of the commercial, a young boy is walking through a train station with his mother.…

More than 480,000 people in the United States die from tobacco use and secondhand smoke, which makes it the leading cause of preventable death in our country (American Lung Association). Anti-smoking advertisements are seen everywhere, either it be on the side of the highway or on tv commercials. The purpose of these advertisements are to persuade you to stop smoking or not to smoke, by showing you horrible graphics and facts about tobacco use, which are often ignored especially by the people that do smoke. This advertisement shows a very dark picture of a little girl blowing bubbles out of a bubble blower, but the bubbles are cigarette smoke. In the bottom right corner it also says “You smoke.…

To prevent secondhand smoke exposure among children, the C/PHN nurses should not only educate children, but they also should educate their parents, teachers, and the community because children are exposed to secondhand smoke not only in schools, but also at homes, cars, and in public places (Olufajo & Agaku, 2015). The most effective primary prevention to prevent people from secondhand smoke exposure is to quit smoking (Healthychildren.org, 2015). Some other primary prevention interventions a nurse can offer are: educate children about the harms of secondhand smoking; educate children to excuse themselves from situations or places where their peer or family member is smoking; propose smoke-free policies for school and other public places (Olufajo…

Smoking Ads Through the Years Over the past few hundred years, smoking has been a prominent habit and a huge industry, generating billions of dollars.
