When people were crossing the border back then and had to be sent to showers, had to have certain vaccines, and were practically dehumanized and stripped from their identity it was the beginning of some label constructs of all Mexicans. All of these terms continue to be applied to people of darker complexions, people that “appear to be Mexican”. After learning where the term “wetback” came from it stuck to me more than the rest. Especially in times now, all that is thought of, politically speaking is the idea of a wall. It’s very upsetting that building a wall has become the solution to stop “potential immigrants”, rather than trying to resolve and eventually have a compromise that would lead to open borders. Putting aside the idea of drugs being brought across the border, I try and avoid the thought of that because in my view the border represents separation.
