According to, “Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.” This includes conditions such as headaches, painful menstrual periods, toothaches, back pain, dental pain, migraines, arthritis and any minor injuries. Ibuprofen is also used to treat and reduce fever as well and is typically administered to individuals, both adults and children ages 6 months and older. Ibuprofen has been recognized by scientists and medical practitioners to be one of the safest over the counter medications available; however, many studies completed have discussed concerns about long term use as well as risks the drug poses on individuals. This research paper will discuss both of these topics as well as the overall biological effects Ibuprofen has on the human body.
Ibuprofen, derived from its’ chemical name (2-(4-Isobutylphenyl) propanoic acid) was discovered in 1961 by Dr. and Professor Stewart Adams of the Boots Laboratories; a British drug manufacturer and retailer. During this time period, there was an ongoing search within the scientific community to find a safer, stronger and more effective medication than Aspirin or Acetaminophen. Upon development and during the clinical trial phase of this medication, it was found that the drug displayed extensive anti-inflammatory results.
