Guns that trafficked/ smuggled in States from other nations are not traceable unless they are seized and entered in database. About 3 million American carry guns every day and about 9 million once a month and primary reason of majority is self-defense while there is no imminent danger or threat in most cases. (Nass 2017) (Rowhani-Rahbar, Azrael, Lyons, Simonetti, & Miller 2017) Research has shown that states with stricter laws have less cases of gun violence in general. Currently federal law requires no waiting periods. Only states requiring waiting periods for purchases of all firearms are California, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois and Rhode Island. California and District of Columbia require 10 days waiting period, Rhode Island requires 7 days, Hawaii requires 14 days. Illinois require 24 hours for long guns and 72 hours for handguns, but non residents are not subject to these waiting
