Botox is a very controversial drug, because of its side effects. It is a poison that stops nerve cells from sending messages to your body, which makes your muscles numb. It smoothens wrinkles, but is far from healthy if it is done too regularly or you have an allergic reaction. This is why many people are looking forward to identifying alternatives to such a treatment. A very popular one, that is probably the first to come up in civilization as a whole, is the medicine cream.…

After reading Anti-Aging is an Oxymoron by Hayflick and Anti-Aging Science: The emergence, maintenance, and enhancement of discipline by Fishman et al, I feel that anti-aging science is a fad rather than a real science. Hayflick starts out by stating an inevitable fact that helped me come to this conclusion: that no intervention can no can slow, stop or reverse the aging process (Hayflick, 2004). Fishman compliments this fact when stating anti-aging medicine is more of a social movement that gives promises and predictions (Fishman 2012). For me to think anti-aging is a real science I would need scientific evidence of anti-aging medicine working, not just predictions and promises.…

Systemic Telomere Length and Aging Telomeres represent essential structure for genome stability, since their role is to protect the extremities of linear chromosomes from degradation and recombination. Furthermore, they also participate in the nuclear architecture, as well as in the meiosis-specific genome recombination and reorganization. Telomere length is the result of the equilibrium between shortening and lengthening mechanisms, and in many different organisms there is a decrease in lenght with increasing age. This suggests that the activity of the enzyme telomerase (which is a specialized reverse transcriptaze) is limiting, even in stem cell compartments.…

Before the nineteenth century, “… this search was linked to the belief that old age was characterized by a significant decline in vital energy” (Haber, 9). Cornaro’s work became known as “the bible of prolongevity advocates,” as he argued that “… individuals were not destined to die at 60 or 70, but rather, with care and a good constitution, could live much longer”…
