Anthropology Observation Essay

For my anthropology class we were assigned to conduct an observation. While making that observation, it was important to take field notes and write up a detailed ethnographic description analyzing the interaction that was being shown. I ended up basically doing the same assignment 3 times, each having different quality of work. My first attempt I thought I have gotten a good understanding of what had to be done. I was observing the various people that purchase lottery tickets from the store. While I was out in the field I tried to write down everything I was observing. In my notes I mentioned the time, date, location, the characteristics of the various people that were coming in the store and the interactions that was happening. I used said …show more content…
The 3rd essay was sort of a continuation of the first. Unlike the other 2 the timing on the 3rd one was to my advantage. The semester was over and I had more freedom. I used the comments Jill left on my first paper and went on blackboard to read the assignment description again. I noticed I left out a part that was very important when doing this assignment. According to the assignment sheet I needed to “choose at least one key term from the textbook or lecture and use that to analyze that behavior.” Jill mentioned Chapter 11 in the text book, so I went to the library and read the chapter. The chapter mentioned the basic principle of capitalism, the western economic theory and Classical economic theory. I used those 3 terms, to help explain what was going on in my community and why. I used statistics to back up my thesis making it show that Purchasing Lottery Ticket was a rational idea for the people in my community. Paying attention to the writing on a paper when receiving it back is important. I always do this because it gives me an opportunity to do better. Jill’s notes on my first paper showed me I must present a detailed description which contain facts and comments and interpretation on what is being observed. My job was to explain why this was going on in my community in a way my readers can understand. Using old papers as guidelines can help continue this quality of work and eventually I will get it well

1-a. Share the learning outcome(s) you either wrote or revised using the steps outlined in the module. One of the course objectives I used to use for Music Cultures World was “Students will be able to identify and discuss the differences and similarities among musical performances from a variety of cultural contexts.” After taking the ACUE 1A module, I decided to revise the course outcome as follows: 1) Students will be able to illustrate the connection between music and dance in African music by producing a 5-minute flash mob. 2) Students will be able to demonstrate the application of a number notation system by creating a 5-minute gamelan performance.…

Assignment 4 was a Summary and Analysis of “The Earth is Full” by Thomas Friedman, and I decided that Friedman’s essay was not effective. Lastly, assignment 6 was an argumentative letter to Secretary of State John Kerry on overpopulation and resource depletion. These three assignments are all very different, and I believe that they are all good representations of my writing experience and ability. Assignment 3, a Summary and Analysis of “A Nation of Mutts” by David Brooks was the second Summary and Analysis that I had written. The first one was the previous assignment and I essentially used that as a learning experience to do better on assignment 3.…

As evidence by their survey responses, the Penn Museum campers held many of the same misconceptions that the surveyed counselors and museum educators encountered or predicted, as well as those mentioned in the literature. There was a lot of confusion among the campers as to what constitutes an artefact and what archaeologists do with artefacts. The common mix-up between paleontology and archaeology was evident. When the campers were asked at the beginning of the week to write down what they knew about archaeology, there were four that mentioned dinosaurs. One camper also mentioned having gone to a “Dinosaurs Alive” exhibition as an archaeology program they had previously attended.…

When we fail to comply with certain standards, which are put in place by society we are often shunned from those who choose to comply with these values. After observing different social settings as well as the expected behavior in those settings I choose to focus my attention on ordering etiquette in fast food restaurants. In each of the fast food restaurants I observed in both the Hub and along downtown East College Avenue I noticed three elements of expected behavior. The first was to place an order to your cashier in first person. The second, consumers were expected to pay for their purchases.…

My first image, which conveyed detail, depicted a banquet being served on the Dean Dome basketball court. I chose to use this image for several reasons, including its repetitiveness, unique color, and relative uniformity. Although many of my classmates chose to photograph minute details of a single subject, such as a piece of wood or stream of running water, I found that this photograph was more expressive of detail in a much larger subject. When taking this photo, I intended to capture as many people as possible with a maximal amount of clarity. This would allow my audience to view the scene as a whole before zooming in to study each individual.…

Scientific Processes in Anthropology Anthropology is a science defined as "the study of humankind in all times and places" (Haviland, et al. 2014:3), and just as any other science those that study anthropology employ the scientific process in their research. The scientific process is a method for explaining, testing, and proving ideas produced by an individual. This process begins with the formation of an idea or question, focusing the train of thought to a particular topic. This idea is then refined into a hypothesis, seeking to provide "a tentative explanation of the relationships among" (Haviland, et al. 2014:16)…
