Introduction
This essay reviewed the key literature regarding Southeast Asia gender studies in anthropology and Vietnamese gender studies. The Southeast Asia gender studies in anthropology mainly focus on the ambivalent role of gender in societies and the conflicting ideological representations and practical representations of gender. Moreover, the influence of economic transform in Southeast Asia on the role of gender has attracted many attentions from scholars. This essay also examined the Vietnamese gender studies. I argue that, the study of gender in Vietnam has been marginalized in anthropology, as well as the Southeast Asia study of gender.

Both Ngueyn-vo (2004), Tran (2004; 2003) and Thomas (2004) took interests in the Vietnamese garment production; specifically garment workers. Ngueyen-vo’s research emphasized the discrepancy between the young garment workers’ consumption of relatively expensive products, and their status or putative class position; noting that their narratives of class and consumption also acknowledge and seek to reconcile these particular gaps. While Tran’s work investigates the ways in which gender roles are reproduced in the workplace, it reflects the understanding of gender character which Rydstrom highlights.
