Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is celebrating American Education Week Nov. 16-20 by featuring a different staff member each day. While these CMS employees have different positions and backgrounds, all of them bring dedication and enthusiasm to public education.
Superintendent Ann Clark recently surprised Oakdale Elementary Literacy Facilitator Christy Reid and Shamrock Gardens Elementary Head Custodian Grady Houston at their schools with I am CMS awards.
Reid and Houston are the first winners to be nominated for how they exemplify the district's core values.
"We know our employees are living these values every day," said Clark. "And we want to honor them for that."

"She gives honest and constructive feedback, always balanced with what is working well as encouragement."
Under Reid's leadership, the school has started a book drive to donate gently used books to local day care centers.
Houston was nominated for his dependability.
"He is dependable in the way the sun is dependable," wrote Assistant Principal Rick Mohrien in his nomination. "We know that he will be there, preparing our school for another great day of teaching and learning, even on the weekend. We know the building will be clean, safe and prepared each day. More than that, however, we know the he will be there greeting students, providing them with a mentor and support for making positive choices, despite the fact that those are not necessarily part of his job description."
Reid and Houston each received a $100 gift card from award sponsor Monnett & Associates. Reid also received a gift basket of from Classroom Central. They will both be photographed for an I am CMS poster to be displayed at their schools.
