Anthem By Ayn Rand Literary Analysis

Within our world today, the United States of America can be perceived as a society least like the one depicted by Ayn Rand. Unlike other countries such as, China, Japan, and North Korea, America embraces individuality and does not practice collectivism. In the novel, collectivism it key to society. Everything that is done by an individual is done for the greater good of the group. America on the other hand, is an individualist country, which means an individual is able to choose for themselves on how they wish to live their life. There are numerous differences when comparing Equality’s society to America’s society. The Home Council limits its citizens in order to ensure nobody exceeds another in any aspects of life while currently in the United States there are no limitations set which enables people to excel at their own practices whether it be beliefs, social, or occupational. Labor is emphasized within novel as they all are working for the greater good of their brothers. The setting consists of a society after the current state of the world where all things are bare and plain and there is a lack of literature, expect the writing permitted by the Council. Citizens are provided with no luxury and lead a simple life that consists of habitual activities which supports Rand’s reasoning for composing Anthem in an austere style. By leading a lifestyle that has no creativity and individuality, taking any other approach besides an austere style would not seem fitting. With the absence of this style there would be no emphasis placed on the world they live.
