In Rand’s diction on what the collectivist society’s rules are: “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil.”(Rand, 1995 p.17) Equality knows what he is doing is wrong, but continues to write since he is an outbreak who wants to find out answers because of having a more curious mind than all his brothers. Writing brings Equality happiness and will allow him to have memories to look back upon when the time passes. Equality hates being a street sweeper and wants to be with the scholars, but because assigned a street sweeper, cannot change his job so instead is left with great sadness in life. First of all, the author’s delivery of the book shows the negatives in a collectivist society and the audience gets to view her attitude and opinion on such. This book can be used to help persuade people that want to be just like others to be like themselves, as no two people are exactly alike and it is alright to be different. Everyone needs to have some sense of individuality in their lives and this book helps to show why because if not, the world could become a collectivist society. This persuades people why not to let it happen comparing the lives of collectivists versus today. As a whole, we get many opportunities, such as freedom of religion, speech, choosing our lives and making our own decisions. These are all luxuries that could be taken away if the world turned into a collectivist society. Another lesson taught was that sometimes doing the not popular thing can sometimes have a positive effect. The story is not telling people to go out and break the rules by any means, but rather chose to be different than others because it may be beneficial. Such as Equality breaking away from the society, allowed him to find the discovery of electricity. Another thing it teaches is to do what makes us happy. Basically saying, not to base our decision off of other people’s beliefs and views but rather our own. Do what makes ourselves happy in every way possible, but also be smart about it. This can be related to the Golden One following Equality into the forest because she know that he made her happy and that was who she wanted to spend the rest of her life
