The Warm-up When reading Ptah-Hotep’s ancient text i stubbled across a paragraph that really captured my attention. Ptah-hotep was discussing how one’s good conduct can be perseved. The quote is “If you desire that your conduct should be good and preserved from all evil, keep yourself from every attack of bad humor.” I feel like Ptah-Hotep was stating that if you want to be a good person who lives life to according to your own ethically standing of good. Block out the bad things people say about you and refrain from letting “attacks of bad humor” or refrain from letting unethical ideas get to you and corrupt you positive state of…

Despite this argument, it is what one does towards self-fulfillment that defines whether they are evil or good. As a result, determining whether something is evil or good is quite difficult. This is because what appears good for one person appears as evil for another person or the community. In this light, it is important that people act in their best interests as long as they do not harm or affect the functioning of the society. On the other hand, one could argue that the actions that lead to the result determine whether the action is evil or good.…

However, many people believe that if an individual is evil that person is evil throughout his/her lifetime and if he/she is good that individual is going to be evil throughout his/her lifetime. But that is not the case from what Psychologist Philip Zimbardo, a previous president of the American Psychological Association and professor who teaches psychology at Stanford University, had believed (TED, 1984). Psychologist Zimbardo believed that people could still change when face either a good or bad life situation.…

It is a proven fact that what separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom is that humans can make conscious decisions over their actions. Instead of relying on just survival instincts, humans act according to certain social norms that are influenced by culture and environment. Given this freedom of choice, human beings mold and adopt their own definitions of good and evil. As a result, mankind’s struggle between good and evil is a common theme in literature, history, and film. John Steinbeck asserts in his novel East of Eden that a person can only be deemed good or evil after his or her death.…
