Anonymous Pros And Cons

Anonymous is a group of hacktivists that wanted to expose corrupt companies and businesses while starting mass awareness and staying unknown. It started out as joke on 4chan, an imageboard website in 2003. They went by the motto “none of us are as cruel as all of us.” Anonymous doesn't have a form of organization or logistics but the way an operation is started is by a member talking to other members about an idea. If they think is a good idea, they will support it. If not supported, the idea will be dropped since they have no one person to be "end all be all." Anon started their first operation called "Habbo". This started because a child in Alabama was denied access to an amusement park pool because of having AIDS. They then went on a site called Habbo (which was a virtual hotel) and dressed an avatar as black men with an afro …show more content…
On February 16, 2011, Anon had written a letter to the Westboro Baptist Church, saying: "Cease & desist your protest campaign in the year 2011. . . close your public Web sites. Should you ignore this warning. . . the propaganda & detestable doctrine that you promote will be eradicated; the damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither our institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover." The Church responded by accepting the challenge telling Anonymous to "bring it on" and further called them "a puddle of pimple-faced nerds" Anonymous then said they didn't send that message but one of the Church's members who sent that to start something with them. Anonymous said, "When Anonymous says we support free speech, we mean it. We count Beatrice Hall among our Anonymous forebears: 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." This ended in a court dispute against the Internet service providers and gained, even more, publicity but this operation was later called

Honestly, is it? Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group, plain and simple. The Southern Poverty Law Center has deemed it as such, as have many major news outlets. You can form your own opinions, yes, but the evidence has just been presented to you, and you'd be daft to ignore…

To oversimplify, matters surrounding privacy can be color coded. There are some issues that are very black and white related to the need to “violate” privacy. However, there are also quite a few gray areas where more research needs to be conducted and statistics gathered to formulate guidelines to determine when it is indeed necessary. Privacy in general needs to be treated in a way that is different from other rights and based on the serious consequences of not revealing facts that would be considered “private”.…

Fred Phelps and six of his relatives belonging to the Westboro Baptist Church traveled to Maryland to specifically picket Marine Lance Corporals funeral services to communicate their beliefs that God hates the United States in reference to the military, the Catholic Church, and homosexuality. The church group picketed 30 minutes before the funeral within 1000 feet of the funeral service on public lands in compliance with local authorities [1]. In Snyder v. Phelps, 09-751 S. Ct. 1 (2011), the signs displayed read as follows, e.g., “Fags Doom Nations”, “Thank God for Dead Soldiers,” “Priest Rape Boys,” and “You’re Going to Hell,”…. “Denial-of-Service attacks are the cyber equivalent of vandalism. Rather than seek to break into the target system, the perpetrator simply wishes to render the target system unusable” (Easttom, Taylor, 2011). This type of cybercrime prevents the end users from attaining the resource accessibility. Denial-of-Service is also known as a DOS. An attack was launched in Santa Cruz County website in California that caused “county’s government entities and programs, including Emergency Services, Law Enforcement, the Courts, Social Services, Agricultural Extension, Employment, Surplus Sales, Vendor Registration, and Construction Projects and Proposals”( U.S. Attorney’s Office,2011).…

Often, the results of any action that work to promote the freedom of speech will not be seen in the short term, but may have great results in the long term . The MasterCard and Visa attack is still in its primary stages and results are not yet clear making the attack challenging to assess in terms of resulting changes. It is also challenging to determine if events similar in spirit to the MasterCard and Visa hack should be permissible. While many arguments can be made against Anonymous, such as, “It simply cannot be acceptable for Anonymous to threaten the security of the United States!” , counter-arguments are just as easy to make.…

Not long ago it would have been unimaginable that a group of random people working remotely from anywhere in the world would be able to band together to electronically fight common enemies. However, recently a hacktivist group identifying as Anonymous has risen in power and size with the goal of fighting anyone they deem threatening to innocent people. Their operations and tactics range from gathering and leaking sensitive and/or restricted information from large corporations, to hacking Google Search in order to produce skewed (and negative) results when people searched topics related to their enemies. This type of hacktivist group is a relatively new idea and there is no set precedent for how the American government should deal with such…

After reading all things about the online privacy and freedom of speech, it can now cause someone to form an opinion on the big question. Should the people really have the right to the First Amendment or anonymity online? The strong arguments from both sides will always be building and building but a person cannot deny that everyone has the constitutional right to their freedom of speech. Although not mentioned in the First Amendment, for obvious reasons, if online is a place someone can speak in the U.S. then they are protected.…

The use of Distributed Denial of Service against MasterCard and Visa has facilitated a societal mind shift to a culture that values individual freedom. Clay Shirky said, “Authoritarian governments stifle communication among their citizens because they fear, correctly, that a better-coordinated populace would constrain their ability to act without oversight. ” This may have once been the case, but in recent years, governments have changed their stance on Internet freedom, with impact from hacktivist groups such as Anonymous. In January 2010, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton outlined how the government would promote Internet Freedom within the USA and abroad . Clinton described freedom to access information, freedom to produce public media, and the freedom to converse with others.…

In this paper, I will argue that the group Anonymous aren’t criminals and their actions are ethical. I will argue that this thesis is true from the utilitarianism view; they are hacking for the good of the people. Some examples I will include are Project Chanology, Hal Turner, and Operation DarkNet. I will also consider the opposing position that Anonymous are bad and unethical. I will argue that it is mistaken because of misknowledge of the operations and what Anonymous’ purpose is.…
