Anomie Durkheim's Suicide

Improved Essays
As discussed by Durkheim in “Suicide: A Study in Sociology”, anomie can also accompany positive social change, such as a growth in economic prosperity or even fame (E&A 2015). In modern society, celebrities are glamorized and seem to have everything they could ever wish for. Many of the talented stars of Hollywood rose up from very poor living conditions to owning multi-million dollar mansions and luxury cars. However, this abrupt change causes many individuals to lose their sense of moral direction as they become confused about who they are and who they can trust. Because of this anomic state, many celebrities resort to destructive behavior or, in some instances, suicide to deal with the pressures of fame and fortune.
