Annual St Francis University Science Day Reflection

Improved Essays
For my participation in the annual Saint Francis University Science Day, I was a moderator for the “Science Bowl” competition. From the beginning of the day (8:30 am), I helped set up the competition areas, met with the judge, timekeeper, and the scorekeeper in order to establish the proper positions that we all needed in order to make the Science Bowl competition rounds run quickly at our station.
Once the competition started at 9:30, I introduced myself and asked everyone on both of the high school teams to introduce themselves to each other and encouraged Evan (the judge) , Blake (the timekeeper) , and Ryan (the scorekeeper) to introduce themselves as well to the high school students participating in the competition.
During the three rounds where our station was needed for the competition, I basically made sure that each round was moving along at a steady pace. The main jobs of the moderator were to make sure that students were not stalling when answering any questions and to make sure that everyone had a fair chance of winning

I had a lot of fun helping out at the Science Bowl and I hope to continue to help out with the event in future years (both while I’m in college and after I have graduated from college.) I was also able to strengthen my ability to accomplish several different objectives presented in Physics 121 as well as several different general education objectives presented here at Saint Francis University. I now understand that since there is so much community involvement in Science Day, this magnitude of involvement adds an additional layer of meaning to all people who participated. It is not just enough to have great resources, but rather, great people who can work with these great resources is needed to make an event as memorable and touching to high school students as the annual Science Day event here at Saint Francis

The mission of the NEOHSTEM Alliance, as stated on their website, is to "promote and support K-12 activities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in Northeast Ohio. " The tradition of forcing students to participate in the STEM Fair has done nothing but contradict this mission; instead of "promot[ing] K-12 activities in STEM," it has bred a hatred towards science, and subsequently, a hatred towards the fantastic outcomes that STEM-related research can offer. As an avid science student who is currently enrolled in an Honors and AP science class as a sophomore, and is a leader of the school Science Olympiad team, I possess a love for science that I do not hold for much else. I have known since my elementary school years that…

Within the primary education curriculum, science is defined as a compulsory subject. However, recent research, which will be discussed in this paper, suggests that science is often taught ineffectively and schools often do not teach the required two hours a week. This paper will focus on whether science is being taught ineffectively and will look at key issues, such as teacher confidence and the gender gap, as to why this is. In a recent survey, carried out by Ofsted (2013, pp.6-8) in 91 primary schools, it was found that science was not being taught everyday and was instead being taught through “irregular science days”.…

The article begins by stating that the recognition of the importance of science in early childhood education has increased in the last few years. Despite this recognition, there are still concerns about the quality and quantity of science experiences present in the classroom. The authors stated that this lack in quality and quantity is due to the generalist nature of teaching in earl childhood settings and the lack in the teacher 's confidence in her background knowledge of the subject. To increase these areas, they believed that children 's literature should be used as an invitation to science inquiry and play. They cam to this conclusion because other studies had shown how successful using children 's literature was.…
