My heart was pounding so loud that I could not hear what she had told me. I had to ask her to repeat herself, and I already felt like a fool. Despite the time spent building up courage, I was already doubting myself, and my dream girl was slipping through my fingers. Similarly, In Araby, a short story in The Dubliners, by James Joyce, a young boy finds himself consumed by “confused adoration” (Joyce). The boy develops feelings for a girl he has never talked to. He spends his time trying to find ways to approach her. This adoration does not give him the courage he needs to actually speak to her. In fact, he admits to having “quickened [his] pace and passed her” out of fear (Joyce). The young boy fears rejection. This feeling is something that resounds with many others. He decides that the perfect idea is to give her a gift to show his strange feelings. He faces many obstacles along the way, eventually the young boy finds himself with his plan completely ruined. At this moment he sees himself “as a …show more content…
It continued on, and once school started I always found myself distracted in class. It was easy to get lost in thought and neglect the world around me. None of these feelings made sense to me, it was affecting me even when she wasn’t around. When she finally talked to me, it caught me off guard. I was so surprised that she had said something to me that I could not gather my thoughts together. She was trying to make jokes and I was so stunned with the situation that I could just smile in response. I had caught her attention and I blew it. Luckily for me, she gave me another chance. I started to build a relationship with her and we became good friends. Unlike the young boy in Araby, I did not stand by “looking at her” and always making sure “that i could not be seen”(Joyce). She appreciated my friendship, but to her it was nothing more. I knew I should tell her how I felt, but I feared that she would reject

Throughout “Araby” the boy experiences obstacles that most people would doubt while attempting to go to the bazaar to buy Mangan’s sister a gift. These hindrances should have caused the boy to question his quest, but instead of doubting himself, and his adoration towards Mangan’s sister, he perseveres through his quest single-mindedly. In “Araby”, James Joyce reveals the ignorance of the boy through his journey to the bazaar by demonstrating his unwillingness to doubt his quest and his adoration for Mangan’s sister. The boy’s uncle arrives home late the night of the bazaar denotes the non-importance of this event for him, and that the bazaar should not become the ultimate event for the boy.…

In fifth grade I had this teacher named Ms. Gonzalez, who was really into theater, and she was always telling us about her plays. She was full of character, full of creativity, and so much fun to be around! Her and I easily connected in that year, and a few other students had no problem softening up to her as well, but it seemed only a selected few really got to her. When the recess bell rang, Ms. Gonzalez had told me and two other girls to stay after class, and of course I didn’t move from my seat as the kids filed out. I waited patiently as she checked for the two other girls, one of my best friends named Ali and another friend named Alizza.…

"Araby" by James Joyce tells a story of a young boy who is infatuated with his friends sister, despite only having one conversation involving a bazaar that she would like to attend, but cannot. The young boy promises her he will retrieve a gift for her, thinking this will woo her, but fails to do so when he is disappointed by the bazaar. The story "Araby" shows that misleading yourself with unrealistic fantasies can be ultimately, disappointing. To begin, James Joyce tells the story from a first person point of view because the narrator experiences these events personally, and most of the story develops in the young boy's head. The author chooses this point of view, which is the narrator looking back on his childhood in first person, because…

In the story “Araby,” the author James Joyce presents the feelings of a boy who senses a severe regret of not taking the chances to express his love, and how he ultimately becomes a victim of his own vanity. It is generally agreed that communication plays a significant role in improving human relationship. With that being said, some people refrain themselves from talking to the person whom they feel they should talk and start imagining that something wonderful will happen. For Instance, I once had a crush back in school when I was an early teenager. I’d do anything just to get a little glimpse of her face, but I was always bashful to tell her how I feel, and consequently, she got transferred to another school and Later on, I realized that everything…

The two stories “A&P” by John Updike, and “Araby” by James Joyce both focus on character personalities. Sammy from “A&P” and the young narrator from “Araby” both go through a transition from childhood to adulthood, something that everybody experiences growing up. Both stories are often compared and seen as a similarity, young characters that take an interest in women, and not being able to tolerate the rejection they receive. Both men fail their missions when Sammy defends the honor of the young women in relation to their bathing suit attire, and in “Araby” a present is promised but not delivered.…

James Joyce utilizes free indirect discourse throughout Dubliners. That is when he writes the characters and their attitudes and emotions influence the way the story is narrated. This adds a layer of complexity to the writing in which the reader better to fully understand the character and the changes taking place within them through a close following of the word choice and tone in the story. “Eveline” details an adolescent girl who must choose between staying home and going away with her lover, and in the end many would argue that Eveline makes the choice to stay based on the passage,”. She set her white face to him, passive, like a helpless animal.…
