In the article, the achievement gap is defined as the gap in performance between races/classes, for instance, one of Lee’s findindings show that low-income African American students still underperform when compared to their white counterparts. Miller asserts that the reason is found in the history of slavery and the treatment of African-Americans post-slavery. Up until 1965 African Americans were treated as second class citizens and for an extended length of time not even citizens. Miller argues poor quality of education results from the lack of respect society had for the African American people. For instance, Miller writes that, “ His mission was considered to be as purely mechanical as that of the ox which pulls the plow. Indeed, his human capabilities were emphatically denied. It was stoutly contended that he did not posses a soul to be saved in the world to come nor a mind to be enlightened in the world that now is”. To some degree, Miller is pointing out that since African Americans were first introduced as animals to society, society will always see them as animals. So unless you change the depiction, the image of African Americans education will not come. Alternatively, Miller emphasizes the role and the importance education will have on the black community. In his eyes, it will teach them self-confidence, arithmetic,and vernacular, but also how to be a person. “Education for Manhood” is a highly reccomended reading, this essay has shown the historical importance of
