President Barack Obama once said “When all American are treated as equal, no matter who they are or who they love, we are all more free.” As a Hispanic LGBTQ American, these words resonated with me. In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…
The Dalai Lama’s perspective of humanity, purpose of life and idea happiness can be compared to the Cyrenaics’s school of philosophy which was established by Aristippus of Cyrene (435 – 356 BCE). Aristippus was a pupil of Socrates, but had adopted a very different philosophical outlook, teaching that the goal of life was to seek pleasure by adapting circumstances to oneself and by maintaining proper control over both adversity and prosperity. Aristippus’s school of thought propounded that the only good is positive pleasure, and pain is considered only evil. The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. The poem says in the beginning 2 paragraphs how happiness is always there and that it “saved its most extreme form for you alone”. I believe what the Kenyon is trying to say at that moment is that you have the power to be happy, even when you are alone. The poem also has very specific examples of who happiness comes to.…

Happiness is something that everyone can experience but, in the novel Brave New World the only emotion that the citizens can feel is happiness. The characters take a drug called Soma, something to prevent the people from being unhappy. Soma was created for the citizens to be under control and live the “ideal” life, which is to be happy forever and instead of working people would just have sex or take drugs. However, the people are unaware of the fact that the government has taught them “being happy is good, everyone should be happy” this was engraved into their minds because if the citizens were happy, they would be oblivious to the crimes the government is committing. The author specifically depicts the effects of the drugs have on the people, “Swallowing half an hour before closing time, that second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds.”…

Many young activists created a variety of organizations, events, and campaigns that supported the environment by protecting it from pollutions, war, and other environmental disasters. The Hippie Movement rejected the encounters with mainstream American lifestyles and encouraged the exploration of the environmental thinking of ecology and environmentalism,…
Luddism began in early 19th century Britain, at the beginning of the progression into the industrial revolution. During this time, machine production and integration was expanding exponentially to meet the growing demands of capitalism and trade, mainly facilitated by the expansive supply of iron and coal. Concurrently to this increase in structural unemployment, depressed trade due to the French and American wars caused an economic depression, and the additional loss of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers.…
