On January 14, 2018, Kevin Reamer, a Republican from North Dakota, said that he would not challenge Heidi Heitkamp, the Democratic incumbent senator, in the 2018 midterm elections. Although North Dakota was won by Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, Republicans are having a difficult time in recruiting strong candidates who are willing to run for Senate. The reason for this is because of a highly unstable political landscape attributed to the unpopular actions of President Trump as well as the significant amount of incumbents running for reelection. As of now, Republicans hold a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate but are at the risk of losing that majority if the are unable to procure strong candidates for the 2018 midterm elections.

Democrats are currently defending twenty-four seats for the upcoming 2018 midterm elections compared to only eight seats being defended by Republicans. Incumbents hold considerable power in the political landscape since they have the advantage of name recognition in addition to well fundraising and campaign programs already put into place. As a result, challengers are put in an overwhelming disadvantage. This is significant because if Republicans can not find individuals who are willing to challenge incumbents, it is likely that they will lose their majorities in
