Summary
The aim of this study was to examine the level of similarity between scores on two Holland instruments; the Self-Directed Search (SDS) and the Holland Personality Mosaic (HPM) and to provide information validating the HPM instrument (Miller et al., 2008). The study attempts to measure the convergent validity of the HPM by comparing the results of it to the SDS results using the lachan Index. Convergent validity takes place when one instrument is compared to another instrument that measures the same construct. Holland introduced the concept of congruence (lachan Index), which is the magnitude of similarity between

If a student has already taken a similar test online, a school counselor can still administer this test to the student and use the lachan index to compare old score and the new score to assist students in choosing a career that may be a better fit for them. Since the test can be administered in person and online, it will be useful for school counselors that may have to assist students who are taking classes online and don’t have a physical contact with the school counselor. The school counselor can send the student the instrument to take at home and have the student send back their score. It will be more effective than a school counselor suggesting careers they think the student might benefit more. Both instruments used can be self-administered and self-scored so it reduces the amount of time that a school counselor will have to spend administering the test to students. This will allow the school counselor to give these instruments to larger groups of students all at once. The measure of convergent validity and congruence will allow school counselors to help students better understand why a certain occupation is more attractive to them. This will give more validity and reliability to suggestions that a school counselor might make to a student or a parent. This study also cautions school counselors to be aware of selecting appropriate assessments for students based on the technical quality of the measures such as the reliability, validity, and appropriateness for various student populations. School counselors should continue researching the validity and generalizability of other career instruments that provide the three-letter

Before starting on this artifact, I was not comfortable with the counseling standards. They seemed obscure and subjective at best. I had no idea that counselors have definitive guidelines with substantial training on how to accommodate each concept to each situation. It is quite daunting to imagine that there is a well-established standard of procedures and protocols that are flexible and successful in addressing each individual need. By compiling the information for this comprehensive notebook, I have a whole new appreciation for the many resources that are available to me that will allow a successful beginning to my new adventure as a school counselor.…

John Krumboltz’s Happenstance Learning Theory discusses that human behavior is the result of different learning experiences made available by both planned and unplanned situations in which human beings find themselves. Since no one can know in advance the destiny or outcome of an individual’s decision, Krumboltz used the Happenstance Learning Theory as an attempt to explain why individuals follow certain career paths in life and how counselors can use this theory to guide their clients through this process. The Happenstance theory explains that every situation (planned or unplanned) is a potential opportunity for someone, as long as they are open and willing to capitalize on these moments. In my own life, I can look back and see where Happenstance…

To elaborate further on social cognitive career theory (SCCT), Hackett, Lent and Brown (2000) discussed strategies for which SCCT counselors should navigate through their clients’ career obstacles. First, Hackett et al. (2000) stated that SCCT focuses on the interaction of individual aspects such as self-efficacy, result outcomes, and future goals, and how those interactions contribute to career development (Hackett, Lent, & Brown, 2000). To begin their evaluation, the authors analyzed environmental factors from a SCCT perspective (Hackett et al., 2000). When examining career development through a SCCT lens, there are two major factors that influence it, (i.e., objective and observed environmental factors; Hackett et al., 2000).…

Compare and contrast two papers, Glazer & Friedman (2009) and De Raad (1998), with regard to the limitations of the method of assessing personality presented in each paper. Bioenergetic-Analytic Character Typology vs. “The Big Five” and objectively assessing something we can’t see. Humanistic psychology has been influenced by body-orientated approaches to psychotherapy, yet little empirical research has been conducted upon approaches. Bioenergetic-analysis’ historic origins are traced back to the early psychoanalytic work of Reich (1933 / 1980), in which personality and character structure were related to body armouring. An area of research relevant to the association of body armouring and character has been the study of muscle tension patterns…

Psychology, the study of how mental processes and behavior are affected by internal processes and the environment, uses three main methods to study behavior: Case studies, correlational studies, and experiments. Each of these studies has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is impossible to determine which is better, as each study’s effectiveness depends on its nature. Case studies, experiments, and correlational studies all have something in common, though: they can all be affected by research bias. This is a disadvantage in any study, and can sometimes drastically affect the results.…

As we prepare to become counselors there are often issues that will "pop up" and we may not be adequately prepared to deal with that particular issue. In some essence, career issues affects all aspects of that individuals life. Trait theorists focus on the measurement of traits and believe that to better understand personality we should focus on an individual’s traits and characteristic behaviour(Saul Kassin,; 2003). Using the five-factor model of personality, trait theorists can develop different kinds of questionnaires, such as the NEO Personality Inventory, to measure a person’s personality traits (Costa, P.T. Jr. and McCrae, R.R, 1992). With this data, researchers can describe a person’s personality using the 5 global factors of the five-factor model. The five-factor model helps trait theorists identify characteristics that individuals possess and to the extent of which they are present (Matthews, Gerald; Deary, Ian J.; Whiteman, Martha C, 2003). Freuds psychodynamic…
