Argumentative Essay On Gene Editing

Gene editing is the alteration of genes in germ cells which become either sperm or eggs and are inheritable to future generations. Genetic editing has been used in agriculture to enhance crops, it is now being explored in humans too. This technology could potentially eradicate genetic diseases and prevent future generations from passing it on. Gene editing is done through the CRISPR-Cas9 system, where the embryo is edited to the desired outcome. It identifies and attacks the viral DNA and then it changes the targeted DNA strand that can be replaced or turned off. This can only be done via IVF (in vitro fertilization), which is taking the genomes of both sexes and fertilizing them in a petri dish to become an embryo then implanted back into the woman’s uterus. There is also, somatic cell modification. Which changes the adult genes of patients that are already born. Altering the cells can only make changes to the body, the edited gene cannot be passed down to further generations from that individual.
As of June 2015, the United States has no current laws prohibiting the inheritable genetic modification of humans. But, should research on gene editing continue in the U.S. with restriction or without regulations? I believe gene editing has to have restrictions, points will be brought up from both sides of the

that are not considered life-threatening these can be treated by other means instead of gene editing. Gene editing does not have to be the main reason to help people with these disabilities. As medical technology progresses in the future, we will find ways to help them without changing the genes, as many would dislike. Recently, at the University of Washington students are developing gloves that can speak when the hands are used to communicate with American Sign Language. Advancements like these can help the patients. Instead of spending a lot of money on gene editing when it is not a life-threatening

In 1987 scientists have found what is now called CRISPR-Cas9 (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeat), which is a tool for biologists to make eugenics viable. Moreover, it’s a powerful, precise, and a surprisingly cheap tool that geneticists use to “cut” open and edit pieces of the genome of the DNA sequence. This powerful tool, CRISPR, uses blades on the DNA strand to cut/break it in half at a targeted location to match the (single interfering RNA) siRNA sequence. The siRNA is a pre-designed sequence located within an RNA scaffold that binds to the DNA and the sequence to guide Cas9 to the proper section of the genome that ensures the enzyme makes a precise cut across both strands of the DNA. For example, bacteriophages hunt bacteria in the ocean killing 40% daily.…

All of the sources that I have found are all showing positive results in experiments that are using CRISPR, which in fact leads me to believe that only in time we will be able to achieve the impossible. So far from my initial research findings I have a different opinion based on my questions I have asked before; one of the being is it possible to edit genes? The answer is most definitely YES. I have described tiny bits of how CRISPR works which was one of my initial research questions; I will go into detail within my full research paper. From my research findings and the experiments that were done resulting in a positive outcome which leads me to believe that in the future we will engineer our own kids and get everything we…

Currently, technology is advancing and with that, comes a gain in knowledge and in freedom, as we now have access to methods such as genetically modifying food and modifying babies. This is due to genetic engineering and biotechnology. Genetic engineering is the modification done to organisms to add new traits through the manual addition of DNA. It is done by removing certain genes to replace them with other to affect a certain trait. This can be used in various positive ways, such as to help those with type 1 diabetes by injecting insulin, as they have a deficiency in insulin.…

For scientists who are waiting for an alternative to existing genome editing tools, Crispr-cas9 is the solution which is comparatively easy and effective in using. Crisper allows the researcher to edit, target, excise and stitch genes of their choice between two end cuts. Crispr has the potential to make such advances which researchers used to dream about. It worked so well, scientists began to issue ethical statements for its use particularly about the power of Crispr to change germline in humans which presents a hotly debatable issue. Genome editing in human germline could have unpredictable effects on future generations.…

Now that we know the clear advantages of CRISPR, lets discuss the two types of editing. They are Somatic Editing and Germline Editing. In Dr. Kelly Grant presentation, she used Cystic Fibrosis as an example to highlight the difference between the two forms of editing. Basically in Germline Editing, all of the individual’s cells would be healthy and have the corrected genome, including his sperm while with Somatic Editing only the lungs would have the corrected genome. The rest of his body would still be ill and his off springs could still get the disease.…

Change for a Longer Life Span Not a Better Span of Life. Everyone has different beliefs and thoughts about genetically modified organisms. Many believe that it is okay as long as the individuals ends up better than they were while others believe that an infant child should not be altered for any reason. What if a change in their genome can cause them to be immune to certain diseases, or even help cognitively with dyslexia? Would people still be opposed to something that can help an individual not deal with chemotherapy later on in life?…

While these are all things that would take many years to achieve, the things we can do with stem cells now could still help save as many lives. The benefits of using these are that people who have diseases their symptoms lower and are able to not have to take the antibiotics for their diseases. There have been numerous accounts of these stem cells actually working like people who have had pain in areas that doctor's said would last forever because of nerve damage but after the stem cell treatment their pain was reduced significantly. Scientists at UCLA have found out that the fat from liposuction is more valuable than they thought.…

The increase of knowledge regarding the topic altering genes has become rapid and have open and paved the hope of designing your own perfect baby. Even today, the use of reforming and adjusting the genes of an unborn child is being put in effect. “Techniques of genetic screening are already being used, whereby embryos can be selected by sex and checked for certain disease-bearing genes. This can lead to either the termination of a pregnancy, or if analyzed at a pre-implantation stage when using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), can enable the pregnancy to be created using only non-disease bearing genes” (Steere, 2011, para. 6). Altering the babies genes can not only harm the baby, however, can also terminate the baby.…

Definition/science of genetic modification in embryos In human beings, genetic modification or engineering is the editing of genes. Genes are segments of DNA and are responsible for our physical characteristics. Genes are all heritable characteristics such as coloration, height, some intelligence factors and predisposition or immunity to particular diseases and physical and mental genetic defects. Human germline manipulation is the intentional altering of DNA in gametes, which are the sex cells in humans.…
