Borenstein, Jason, Joseph Herkert, and Keith Miller. "Self-Driving Cars: Ethical Responsibilities of Design Engineers." IEEE Technology and Society Magazine 36.2 (2017): 67-75.
The author of this article describes potential benefits of autonomous cars, as well as responsibilities that many people in corporate hierarchy producing the cars may face. He gives several examples of how manufacturers made choices in the past that led to different types of harms, including deaths. There is a potential that autonomous cars will also lead to harm and raise many important questions that designers and engineers will have to answer
The article is very informative and will be a good source for my project since it focuses on the problems that engineers will face when working on autonomous cars. There are plenty of questions that are asked today, which …show more content…
"Autonomous Vehicle Ethics: Stock or custom?." IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine 6.3 (2017): 108-110.
The article describes the trolley problem and how people make decisions based on the amount of harm some of the actions may …. to the public or themselves. It also describes that different cultures have different ethical frameworks and what is considered good in one culture may not be in another. It gives several examples in which autonomous cars will not act ethically, if they all have the same software and made to act the same, no matter who drives them or in which parts of the world they are used.
The article will be a good reference for my project because it describes in detail the trolley problem, which is only one of the many problems that autonomous cars may face. Based only on one problem, the author shows how many other questions can be derived and how it’s not an easy task to answer them. He also shows how people will be asking many questions themselves, before making a decision to purchase/rent or use taxi services from an autonomous car.
